Possibly...5 and a bit...depends on the bees.
I have a brood and a half on my Paynes hive. The brood box is the jumbo box. There are still loads of bees in this hive, headed by a Carniolan queen ( I hope she is still there as she hasn't been seen since MAQS...only eggs seen). I think they would be really short of space if we take away the half brood box, ATM, and in any case, it has lots of stores in it too, which I want to leave for the winter bees.
Here is the difficulty. The half brood box won't fit under the jumbo brood box as it doesn't have the cutouts for the lugs. So consequently, can't nadir. Does anyone have ideas about how we can get stores into the jumbo box for the winter or do we just have to put a QE on until all the brood has emerged...and then remove the half brood box plus it's stores. I can't leave the QE on between these boxes for the winter and I would like to start next year with them just in the jumbo brood box.
The only idea I can come up with is to extract the honey and feed it back to them to put in the brood box.....at a later date...when they have reduced in numbers.

Hi Trem,
Cut the lugs off, they're a nuisance. Do you have a spare floor of some kind that you could stand the hive on while you slice them off?

Edit:
Better still, make an under floor entrance for it, poly floors are not worth the hassle.

I didn't think of doing that! I have a 2nd Paynes hive...not yet used. I could chop off the lugs on the floor and put it under whilst OH does the same to 1st hive. I will take a look to see what can be done. Thank you

What is an under floor entrance?

... The half brood box won't fit under the jumbo brood box as it doesn't have the cutouts for the lugs. So consequently, can't nadir. …

The simple and non-destructive solution is to put a spare Apiguard eke onto the poly floor. It'll sit nicely inside the lugs, like a wooden box would.
The poly shallow box will sit on top of the eke, without a problem.

I agree
Also for future information a wooden super will fit just nicely between floor and brood box , no need for any cutting.

Great ideas...knew I could rely on you folk to come up with the goods. I don't have any wooden hive parts but there are some bits of wood lying about. It only needs to be deep enough to raise the shallow above the lugs.
I think I will collect a hammer, nails and some bits of wood and wave them about in a very business-like way in front of my brother in law and OH tomorrow. They both fancy themselves as carpenters and I will get an eke....Hee Hee! Also it will be very useful in the future.....yes definitely tell them I need 2 to be made.
Just got to get the measurements sorted from the spare hive.
Oh thank you so much.

Just got to get the measurements sorted from the spare hive.

The lugs are designed so that a wooden national box (or eke) fits inside.

Wooden National boxes are 460mm external square. (A useful number to commit to memory - even for poly hive owners.)
That's the dimension for your eke. Internal dimension to depend on your wood's thickness. Height to be at least the height of those lugs. A little more height will make your eke useful for all manner of other tasks …
B&Q sell some adequate stripwood in various appropriate sizes. Depending on your choice, the eke could cost between £3 and £6. Not ruinous.

The Paynes (and BHS) poly nationals are 500 mm square externally, but you are better advised to stick to 460 for ekes, coverboards, feeder boards and/or clearing boards.

Plans for UFE stored...Thx JBM
460 mm committed to ageing memory cells. ....Thx itma.
Such a wealth of information.....we should write a book...oh yes someone already did that!
The great thing about this forum is the total generosity of sharing ...be it information or solving problems or just a laugh. Thx all

Yaaa hay...now got 3 eke's. Went to the jumbo bodge it quick....bought some wood...my brother in law cut it to size and screwed it together. I have painted them to match the rest of the hives. They fit perfectly and I will be able to use them for feeding etc in the future....clever forum friends!

Sorry to bring this back from the past!

Did anyone have a problem with brace comb using the eke to raise over the lugs?

Swienty Nats are also 460 and why anyone else should make their poly to a different size and have the cheek to call it National is beyond stupid.

Compatibility is everything.

Compatibility is everything.

All the poly manufacturers have different dimensions and call them national hives, if they had all stuck to the complete plans/dimensions/measurements, laid out for the BS National hive, they would all be much the same, so no problems.

Yes. Much better to lose one frame and keep compatibility

I can't see any of the documents, are they still there for others? I'm using a Mac

It's a guide to building rather than measurements set in stone - tweak to suit :)

It's cold but not wet - too cold for a mac so I'd rather a jacket and a cap if it rains :D
