At the corner of a fairly steep sloping field is a patch with fifteen foot high trees on two sides.

The slope is as you are looking at your tilted computer screen and the corner is at your right side bottom.

Forage is mainly over the trees (right and bottom of your screens) but some late flower will be at top of slope furthest from hives (top right of your screens)

Which way would be thought best to face them, up the slope or into the corner facing hedge and trees.

Thanks in anticipation.

Am I missing something? There is nothing on my screen apart from a picture of Tigger and some phone numbers. No trees or flowers!!!

Your screen is sloping away from you at the top yes? Now imagine a field with the same slope. then imagine an apiary at the bottom right-hand corner.

They will come out of the hive whichever way the entrance faces, then fly to wherever the forage is, regardless. I would face the hives into the hedge as this will act as a windbreak.

You dont give compass bearings. If the hives are in shade, that may well shorten the working day.

My screen is not sloping away from me. And it shouldn't be, either. Poor H&S.

I'd have thought face them into the trees/boundary to give you plenty of space to work behind them.

Wouldn't you be better making your decision based on other factors such as ease of access, wind direction and the sun, and let them sort out for themselves how to get to nearby forage?

Ah right! Have you seen my screen, its a very steep slope? Its pretty much on the vertical, don't think the bees would like it!!

As said before they will go the direction they want to go. Consider temp (frost pocket), shade, any chance of flooding, wind direction if a factor.

Thanks all, face hedge is best then as per thoughts.
