Hello all,

I took delivery of 4 nucs in July and transferred them into full hives. They drew out all the frames of foundation in the BB and quickly filled them with storeand brood. I put on a QE and a super just in case they needed more space.

Last week I noticed that they were starting to fill some of the super frames and on checking today two of the colonies have filled the supers completely and are starting to cap them.

The activity outside the hives today was tremendous so I am thinking that they have found a late nectar source (they are in striking distance of some heather)

I wasn’t intending to keep supers on over winter. Am I ok to remove them and feed if necessary? Was hoping to do this and treat with varroa strips next weekend. Might have to wait until it’s capped though?

Thanks

Certainly - that's the whole point of keeping bees. There is no rule that says you must start treating before the end of August, wait for them to ripen the honey, get those supers off then immediately treat then start winter feeding.

Lucky you add a super of thin foundation if there’s heather about, save as cut comb or crush/strain at least you have the option!
