I’m picking up a small colony next week and wondering whether they’ll be best in the nuc for a bit or whether to move them straight into their smart new poly hive? And if the latter will I need dummy boards in the BB, or will foundation and some stores (and poss some brood from another hive) be more appropriate?

depends how small is small. if they are on four to five frames in a six frame nuc, just put them into a hive. One frame of foundation, then the nuc then the rest foundation. No need to fiddle around with dummy boards at this time of year, nor with adding frames of brood. As for adding stores, you bare better off feeding them 1;1 syrup as they will use it to draw out comb.
