Hi all, we have to move a hive approximatly 12 meters. Moving it in small increments is not possible due to a steep slope from current position to new one. Ive heard waiting for a cool rainy day in forcast, closing them up for 24 hrs with mesh for ventilation, moving the hive all 12 meters in one go, then before removing mesh , placing shrubery branches ect in front of landing board and hive entrance, to make bees aware of new home to make them orientate their new position. I have only had to move 3mile + distances before and would appreciate your thoughts before i undertake this method. Thanks.

Can you wait for the winter when they aren't flying?

I agree wait for a cold spell of a week or so, put the hives facing a different way and just move them. Wear suites in case of accidents! They happen!

personally, I would lock them in for three days. I would also change the direction of the front of the hive. It is normally enough for them to realise something is different enough to re-orientate.

Thanks everyone. I kind of wanted to move them soon as their new home has been cleared (removal of 7 trees n whole lot of shrubbery)entirely for them and has better sunlight all day with better protection from winds ect.. i was always told to keep them facing south. Is this a wrong? With new site having better conditions weather wise would you still wait till winter?

Yes as the site at the moment is really acedemic.

They and you are better waiting and do in when clustered.

Some say face south, others say hives in an apiary should face different directions to help stop drifting!
