To boil in lye old frames is very different than sterilizing poly boxes.

Children's plastic sledge is very good in lye washing.

Polyboxe's out measure is about 50 litres. You put one side onto sledge and then rotate next wall.

Need to remove the child beforehand

2. Cillit bang is an acid cleaner so irrelevant to your statement

. You are irrelevat yourself. Cillit bang is one of the best dirty loosers in polyboxes in normal 20C temperature, - what I have used. Surely you have better. I do not know what is there inside but it works.

My statement and my statement. I have used 25 years polyhives and I have tried to find handy cleaning systems to me and I tell about them to you.

You are all adults and you should take care yoursel without my help.
Keep you chemicals and knives in safe place. Don't hurt yourself of family members. Amen.

I have university education in chemistry, but I wonder why these discussions in this from are soon plaa plaa plaa.

When lye was an ordinary house hold stuff 60 years ago in Finland (loundring) , it was very popular stuff to make suiside. Now when the Finnish have much cars, driving against rock or out of road curve is more favourable. In Helsinki traffic bicycle is 6 times more dangerous than a car.
And alcohol kills here more men in work age than anything else.

Yes, we really do have stories.

If I was to use an old galvanised steel cold water tank for the lye solution, would there be any issues, or should a different type of container be used?
NaOH takes the galvanisation off (reacts with the zinc). "Old galvanised... tanks" are prone to leaks if you start stripping them plus you have a lot of zinc contaminated solution to deal with. Depends what you intend doing with the tank afterwards, the attrition rate depends on concentration and temperature but not looking good as a long term plan. Storage is usually in plastic or plastic lined tanks (polyethylene or similar).

I note you do not address my point and reply with more irrelevant comment because you just don't like to be corrected.

Thanks Alan, I suspected I might run into problems, the tank was going to be my frame cleaning tank with the possibility of boxes fitting in as well.

Cillit Bang Grime and Lime Spray product contains two acids: sulfamic acid and phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid (also known as orthophosphoric acid or phosphoric (V) acid) is a weak mineral acid with the chemical formula H3PO4

I have one available and it would mean a number of frames or boxes would fit easily into it for cleaning.

:thanks:

bye bye zinc tank de-galvanised aah AlanF beat me to it

OK so I think we we have gathered that caustic soda can be harmful. Lets assume we are sensible here and are wearing the correct PPE and using a suitably diluted solution then there is no reason why it can't be used. Which comes back to the original question which Finman so kindly answered, 3%.

PS I fill my car up with petrol everyday and don't have any problems, it's never once blown up or have I got it in my eyes. That's equally as dangerous!

You need a more economical car :)

@ Stickyfingers - the silliness isn't personal, it's just beekeepers with spring fever and being stuck indoors! :D

Ignoring the no smoking advice, etc, hydrocarbons in your eyes would be very sore very quickly, but less likely to lose your sight than with hot caustic soda. Remember, or here is something new for you to think about (for those that are awake): Your eyes are the only place on the whole of the body with live living cells on the surface; the rest is covered with dead cells which at least offer a little protection before serious burning is experienced.
