We had a swarm last year. moved in happily stayed and started to make progress... then suddenly it halved in size... we couldn't find the queen, and found hidden in a fold on the edge of a frame an empty Q cell (lesson in moving clusters of bees we have since observed fully) Then 3 days later the bees were still quiet we went through again, and found eggs and a large queen. at no point did the bees utter horror at being bereft so we think that a swarm arrived with a virgin once settled the queen and her bunch cleared off leaving the new entourage and they have been ever since ... nice bees actually... it was interesting...
