I totaly agree with the comment Cris makes: thanks for letting us hear your experiences.
It's incredibly difficult, I think, to get consistent advice: not on forums so much, but from beekeepers. After all most people have one mentor, so you're not going to hear a range of opinions from that one source.
Most, even ones whose advice seems iffy, are still much better at handling bees than beginners (I speak for myself here!) can be.
