Thank you for stopping by to check out my little bee blog to find out more about me and my first bee hive.
I live in Florida, US. By day, I am a sub-acute rehab nurse by profession, single mom who has an affinity for doing things in pairs. Two children (one of each, under 12 years old), two doggies (one nanny girl of a red nose pitt and one huge dumb football player Italian Mastiff), two kitties (They are a male/female matched pair of black and white Garfields, those two are.) Had two gold fish, but one left us, and now... my first ever bee hive. I only have one. Right now, one is enough. Yes, I have read that I should have gotten two... however, I simply could not afford at this time until after I graduate my nursing bridge program next week. Besides, is a good number to learn on.
I became interested in beekeeping several years ago after my neighbor's two hives where destroyed by the county we live in as a code violation. (State laws have since changed and now supercede county regulations... thank goodness.) However, the veggie garden that I plant every year, yielded squat due to the lack of honey bees in the area. =(
Since that observation, I have been keeping up on the plight of the honey bees. Seems to me, that we all should be hugely concerned about their die offs in thirds...our ability to feed our populations are directly effected by having the species around.
Annnnywho... Not here to preach to the masses, especially since we're seemingly of the same mindset. Honey bees are very important and worth saving, if possible.
What started out as my daughter's science fair project, has now enveloped my family. Not just me and the kids, but bee fever has shot through my family with requests for me to put a hive or two of my girls on their properties...they all have either container gardens or farm like gardens... we'll see. I like the idea, but baby steps...my goal now is to learn to get through my first honey flow...lol
Am looking forward to exchanging information and gaining usable knowledge while making new friends. So feel free to stop by and introduce yourself... It may take me a day or so to reply, but I will. =).
Right now, the question for the day is... Can honey bees get drunk off of sugar water??? =/
