Does anyone know of anyone that will sell fondant in the Walsall area without the huge postage costs. I am not a member of any local association.
Looking for 1 or 2 12.5kg blocks.

Any independent bakers that make their own bread, usually the small ones are the best to go for. Look for the bakers with the queue outside!

I went into my local baker for fondant and was quoted £24 / 12.5 kg block, I managed to knock them down to £18. Bako's fondant is under £10 and delivery is again £10 for orders under £50. I would get a quote from your local baker and then work out whether it is economic to bulk buy for future use from Bako.

Just using fondant at the moment bought four years ago - it's fine. no need for any fuss I just leave it in the shed - a bit of atmospheric dampness keeps it soft, box looks a bit manky but the fondant's fine

Bako fondant is now over £15 for a 12.5 kg block.

That's over £5.00 increase in 6 wks. I was shopping in Sainsbury's today and saw sugar at 90p/kg that's an increase of 20p since mid December. I cannot understand these increases, British Sugar is overwhelmed with sugar having to find storage space for this years crop which is going to be exceptional. I understand they are using any available buildings even redundant aircraft hangers.

There's something very odd going on - Farmfoods are still offering 2Kg for £1, minus the value of a discount voucher which is valid until Jan 31st.

I've just had a quote (received this morning) from Bako North Western, and they are quoting £15.19p for a 12.5kg block. No postage charge but there is a £75 minimum order.

Back in August/September Bako was quoting just under £10 for 12.5 kg. I wonder why the big increase in price?

I was quoted £15 from bako today for fondant
Wonder why different regions charge different prices
1kg granulated sugar in asda down to 59p
Farmfoods still cheapest round here

I had a look at the Bako web sites for the various regions, SE and Anglia £15 South Wales £8.00, Non of the other sites quote prices saying they become out of date too quickly.

I cannot see the reason for such an increase in 6 wks when the raw material is in surplus.

How about commercial opportunism ? Say - some person in their sales dept notices that sales of fondant have risen abruptly - and there have been lots of enquiries from beekeepers about the ingredients, etc. So - looks like beekeeping may be the principal cause of a spike in sales.

Then a quick Google for 'beekeeping + Bako + fondant' turns up this site and others like it, where people are recommending buying a stock of fondant from Bako whilst their prices are so low. Yet more Googling turns up the info that fondant is used by beekeepers as an emergency feed in the early spring following a warm winter.

So - as we're currently having one of the warmest winters on record (and I say that with some confidence) - it's therefore a fairly safe bet that there will shortly be a huge demand for fondant, and Bako have a virtual monopoly on countrywide fondant delivery, with their few competitors already charging £15 plus. What would you do if you were in Bako's position ?

It'll be interesting to see if they hold the £15 price come April or May, when they can't sell the stuff in any volume.
