History: When we had the house built in 2000 we had a conservatory fitted.
It's roof is Polycarb and has been off twice to remove internal flies and replaced with new panels once.
Just before Christmas it started leaking and has got worse.

We are going to replace it with glass but have a choice of Upvc clad roof beams or aluminium beaded beams at twice the price. From the conservatory we can see most of northern Dartmoor (3 miles away) and the wind turbines at Barnstaple and on to Exmoor, so we are a little exposed.

Are there any experts or experienced consumers out there?

:thanks: Tim

We have a glass roof in ours, makes it more habitable all year round.
Check that the ring beam & window frames are able to support the new weight and any possible snow loading! I have a foot in both camps :D
Pvc clad is warmer. What exactly are you asking though?

We have had most types, double glazed glass was best, quietest, best to see out of, however my only tip is to make sure you have an opening window at the highest point otherwise you will get millions of flies trapped inside. They fly up to get out and can't find an opening! We also needed blinds, bought cheap ones from ikea and adapted them as roof blinds, worked really well!

:thanks:Folks,

We're dealing with "reputable" suppliers with a 10 year guarantee!!
Our choice is a Upvc clad and sealed roof beam (as we have now with leaks) or a Ali beaded roof beam that looks to be more water resistant at twice the price? We're probably only going to be here for 5yrs. before we move nearer the medical centre, old age doesn't come alone, but we wish to sell on a property with NO issues.

Tim

We have a double glazed glass roof. It's heat resisting and self cleaning.
The self cleaning part is good.
Not sure about the heat resisting, it is a bit but when the sun shines all day (remember that?) it still gets hot.

You're in Cumbria and we're in Soakhampton, "2 days sun a year"!!

Thanks for your input

Sorry I got interrupted by SWMBO on the last reply.
The flies in question, got into, and are still within the Polycarb.

Our flies are cluster flies and come out whenever the temp. rises.
We used to keep 10,000 free range layers and had NO fly problems.
We talked to Dr. B.Bell at ADAS and there was no connection between our 'conservatory' flies and our birds, BUT we've still got the b**ggers 2 yrs. after getting rid of the chicken.

Should we go go for for Ali frame and bead at double the price or not?

Any info. is welcome!!

Tim :thanks:

obverse the polycarbonate sheets ends wasn't sealed during installation ,
alloy bearers and double glazed glass is best and heat resistant too will help even tinted glass , the leaks should not be there if the sheets have been replaced contact the repairer to have it resealed again.

For what its worth I would go glass with plastic if its suitable. Poly always discolours and has issues with stuff in the cavities. If your only going to be there 5 years more then why double your costs? Save money and buy bee stuff

Thanks for the input folks.
The roof is out of guarantee, even the 'repairs'.
