Anyone know if 14 x 12 ( or extra deep national as it used to be called) was ever part of the British Standard?

Certainly, but the term "National" on its own is generally accepted to be the Deep.

Just because the two models share the same footprint doesn't make them the same format

I try to refer to the deep National as that or as a "Standard National". Less likely that it could be misunderstood - and it will be, if it can be!
