I have four colonies at home. The two 'local' colonies resist robbing reasonably well; in fact one of them has a veritable wall of bees across the entrance, and a gap couldn't get through without moving bees aside. the Buckfast hive is strong and seems to ward the wasps off, but the Carniolan is suffering dreadfully. Are they just a placid strain of bee, or am I unlucky.

Traps/smal hive entrance etc. are all in place.

My guess is they are your weakest hive in terms of bee numbers?
Strong hives simply don't get robbed.

Are they +Q? If not that would be one explanation.

My carnica have a wall of guards across the entrance.
As do all the other colonies which have an entrance I can see
Some have an underfloor entrance so I can’t see the guards

Thanks everyone. It isn't my weakest colony, and the queen is laying. I'll keep an eye on them.

All my colonies are on tunnel entrances or under floor entrances all year long and through out winter.. even the smaller colonies are safe from robbing and also mice in winter... it might pay for you to make a tunnel entrance and help the colony out... i had a nuc badly robbed last year and it is scarey how quick the hive can be emptied of stores..luckily i caught them just in time and fed them and moved them to another location.

I just watched one of them fly out of the hive, carrying a dead wasp. Score one for the good guys.

Underfloor entrances (kewl floors) do work well on all fronts. Millet, are yours OMF as well, if so any disadvantages ?

Have you any photos of tunnel entrances Millet.... they sound good and work well. I'm not having any trouble yet but do have my hives at home fairly close together ....

Found one of your posts from last year with the pics thanks.... they look good. Think I will be doing some woodworking over the weekend.
