Yes I have just changed a few hives over to 14 x 12 and notice a big difference in lifting the brood box.

I didn't believe in 'beekeepers back' until I asked an osteopath how many of his patients are beekeepers. I'm now on his list too!

Question: How to avoid a bad back, answer, wear a support brace, available from sports shops or on the web cost about £25. I wear one at work for lifting heavy items like ovens and worktops etc, I now wear it when beekeeping and lifting the hives and especially thankfully heavy supers !

Can you share a link Dave?

It's not so much the weight, but the way we lift things. We had an osteopath give us a lecture during the winter and it's the way we put things to the side, bend and twist that causes all the major problems.

I'm trying not to do it, but sometimes I catch myself.

So, newbies (and oldbies), take heed.

They key point to avoid back problems is try to use your legs for lifting and try to keep your back straight with your chest stuck out, if you need to pivot left or right while under load use your legs to turn not your back, saying that it is hard to train your brain to do as such, i done my back years ago and i was on the sick for 9wks, painfully crippling are bad back injuries.
Hope it is fixed soon Snelly, i would offer to give you a hand if you need it but i still only have one.

Most back problems are due to weakness/stiffness in the lower spine.

I had problems for years despite lots of exercises until I started doing :

Lie on back with legs bent and feet on floor- hip width apart.
The small of the back should be relaxed and with natural curvature leaving a space between back and floor.
Press lower spine flat on floor and hold 3-5 seconds.
Push lower back up so spine is arched: hold 3-5 seconds.

Legs and rest of body do not move at all in this exercise.

Repeat 10 times. About 1 1/2 minutes.
Repeat 5 days /week.

After 3 months, backpain no longer is an issue for me. But all back pains are not the same.


Whatever you do, you need to strengthen your back and make it more flexible. Correct posture when lifting helps. As does not slouching on the sofa..sitting comfortably in chairs and driving with a decent seating position.

I used to weightlift so lifting weights is not really a problem.. it was the aftereffects..

Now about that jumbo langstroth brood box full of honey.. (yes I have one). Frame by frame jobbie..

Sometimes it's the dead weight that causes problems or more often twisting the spine when carrying weight that is some distance from the body - the centre of gravity of a National super is 230mm from the box edge and if it does not touch your body (keeping the suit clean!), the c. of g. moves further away, increasing stress of the back.

Another source of back injury is a stumble when carrying a load. How many apiaries do you know with long grass/weeds, bits of debris and pallets laying around, even your own tool box left where it can cause a trip.

Another hazard specific to beekeeping is getting stung when lifting a box - it happened to me - I was stung on the finger and dropped the super box but the sudden movement "tweaked" my back. I wasn't very popular with the bees in the box either!

So it's more than just weight and twisting - it's about the lifting environment and avoiding getting stung!

I have that back problem. But the best cure is a good mattress. Splended thing is a high seat of KIA car. Toyota's seat was a real pain on long trip.

Two years ago I realized that soft mattress made my back sick, that I can hardly walk. When I changes the mattress, in the morning all pains were gone.

When you sleep, your backbone should be in straight position, and not curved into the Deepness of mattress.

The most odd thing was the price or the Jysk's mattress. The start was 570 €, lowered price 350€, but when I payed it, it was 240€.

And when I went to buy the same mattress to my wife, the price really was 570€. The seller said, that wait, that Christmas is gone. And miracle happened: IT was 240.
