I have a few sheets of correx and I was hoping to try and make a nuc to use as a bait hive.

Does anyone have a template?

Many thanks

You could just buy one and then use that....an investment?:)

American swarm catchers say, that plastic hive is not good as bait hive.

It is said too, that bees do not like fresh wood board aroma.

Try this thread on the Scottish site. You'll have to close the gaps in the first part of the url because this forum's software removes it.

The measurements for a National nuc are in the picture on this page of Jon Getty's own website.

If you're not using Nationals it's easy enough to make one by using a frame as a template, and make the box big enough for as many frames as you plan to use.

There's also a dimensioned drawing on the Dave Cushman website.

Why bother? Making a nuc is one thing. A bait hive is another, almost entirely, different item. Think sensibly - most swarms are from very large colonies (more than one deep National box equivalent). They are not moving out of a cramped house just to move into an even more cramped flat, are they?

Why not? It's something to do, is a bit of a challenge and it doesn't hurt anybody.

I enjoyed making mine, and had to work out the measurements because I use Jumbo Langs. They're plenty big enough for a bait hive, but I've found they do need a section of mesh floor if a colony is going to be in it for any length of time.

A National nuc might not match Seeley's findings but a small cast will be happy enough in one, surely?

I've yet to see a 14 x12 correx nuc. Possibly exist. But he is on National deeps. I stand by my comment. Why bother.

Even with my 14 x 12 six framers, I would usually stick on a 'half'super' if used as a bait hive. I have found them to be quite attractive to swarms in the past. Never used a translucent box as a bait hive, either. Think about it.

Wish that was true!
This year I've collected 4 swarms and attracted 4 to my 40L bait hives. All but one have been cast size. So who is getting all the prime swarms?
