I had the pleasure of watching a mating flight leave from one of my hives on 5th September that had a VQ emerge about a week prior. It occurred at about 2pm whilst I was fortuitously at the apiary. Initially, I saw what I thought was a small cast swarm but then noticed that there wasn't the urgency that a swarm has when it leaves a hive, but then noticed that they were simply drifting along the hedge line and congregating in a corner some 150 yards away. It was eerie walking after them and almost being able to keep up!
About 20 minutes later the bees returned to the hive in dribs and drabs.
So it's still happening at this time of year folks.
