    Smoker fuel

Just a thought - I notice that th**nes sell "smoker pellets" - quite expensive and looks uncannily like wood pellet cat litter - cheapy cheapy £2.80 for 10 litres from my local supermarket (the green one) might be worth a whirl.... has anyone tried this? I'll see how it burns and report back...

colony collapse disorder - radio 4 now

This is interesting - just been reading this paper from the US about a parasitic fly, Apocephalus borealis, which attacks bumblebees, it has 'jumped' host species and is affecting honeybees. The fly lays its eggs in the bee, which disorientates it and causes it to leave the hive at night. The...

Is possible to be cruel to Honey Bees

When i was little, the boy next door used to like pulling the wings off bees - now that was cruel. As a newbee, I ponder ...... are bees more susceptable to disease because we take their lovely honey and feed them cheap nasty sugar instead? ....If i'd spent all day cooking up something lovely...

    What to do next?

AHA! my dad had this very same problem as a surprise swarm moved in before the hive was fully constructed! a friendly local beek did just this - wired the comb into a frame. these 2 frames are now on the outside of the brood box and there is brace/bridge comb all over the place as these two...
