    Oxalic acid advise

Hi, My bees had capped queen cells last weekend, I'm assuming that the queen will have hatched out about now but may not be mated. I also have a serious mite problem, so my two questions are: 1/ when should I treat - this weekend or next? Should I leave alone for another week and check for...

    multiple problems :(

my main problem I think is I'm queen less and none of the queen cells look good. there are quite a few can I just leave them all and let them fight it out or should I break some down? I'd prefer to avoid swarming. my secondary problem is lots of dead bees outside the hive i also see a few...

How long to inspect a hive

So how long do people take to inspect a hive. I guess a double brood box takes longer, but I find it seems to take me about at least 1/2 an hour. Are there any efficient short cuts? How do people manage >10 hives? Does it just get quicker with experience? Thanks, M

    Turning/moving a hive

I currently have one hive but hope that they will want to expand some time this year assuming the weather ever picks up. I was considering putting another hive essentially down stream (i.e. in the flight path) of the first. I realise this might not make for ideal working conditions so I'd like...

Oooops a few too many stings

I have 1 hive and I'm in my first year. Mostly I'm careful and having taken both a taster course and a full course, read the books etc. Go to the apiary meetings at our local group. Anyway yesterday I caused a bit of drama unfortunately, my hive stands on a concrete slab and has started to...

Anyone using icing sugar only to treat Verona?

Hi, I had a low drop rate before winter and thought I'd try just dusting the bees with icing sugar. I see in the Bbka and at our recent talk from a bee inspector only chemical treatments work and doom for all else. Is it just too labour intensive for most people? Or does it really not work...

How many supers for summer (NE)

Hi, I guess there's no fixed rule but how many supers am I likely to need fur summer for one hive? I'd like to be prepared, this will be my first year there seem to be plenty of bees and they are looking busy already. Thanks, M

    inserting new frames between brood

Hi, I'm a bit new here. I think I've made a bit of a mistake separating the brood frames too early I guess if they've been over night in this situation it's too late to reunite? I was separating them in order to move some of the frames to the edge for eventual removal as they are the frames...

Woodpeckers - when are they an issue?

Hi, I know there are lots of woodpeckers in the woods near me so I guess I need to protect the hive. I gather sometime around autumn - any better clues - beginning/end? A friends suggested wire mesh attached to the roof, though I was planning on a simple frame I could sit on the roof such...
