Genetics papers and books begginers to highly advanced.

How about "The Phylogenetics of Bees" - edited by Rustem Abuzarovich Ilyasov and Hyung Wook Kwon I've not actually read it myself, it's on the pile of books enthusiastically found, but then never quite got around to! (The contents seem to fit the bill though - "The origin of the European Bees...

Accepting credit / debit card payments for Honey.

A basic question if I can, is it possible to use these units with more than one phone? In other words, if I am out, can my wife use her phone with the same card unit to take money? Just trying to work out if these could work for the small number of people who buy from our door. David

I’d love five, national sized with a rim and feeder hole, please, if it proves worthwhile. Thanks, David

    Bees don't like strimmers

I agree, means you can cut late at night too without disturbing any neighbours.

    Super cement

You could use that water as the starter for mead, to find some use, but my experience was that it was a slow old process! I would do as you say, wet, and give back to the bees. Personally I'd put above the crown board in the hope they'd then move. David Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    tank heater jackets

Yes, I use one of the Lidl jam makers as a water bath, enables me to soften a tub of OSR honey overnight, makes it soft enough to cream it in the morning for jarring. I don't trust the thermostat on the jam maker so used an STC 1000 controller, which I had previously used for homebrewing. The...

What do seasonal bee inspectors do in the winter?

Same with mine, he was looking at trees, although I think he was looking for ash dieback. I assume that is for the plant health people (so another part of the same new body).

    Plans

Thanks for these Muswell Metro, the measurements work really well. I'm making up a swarm box - although not quite finished (still a lid to go, but got the frame ledges in and now the glue is setting). And surprisingly, for me, it doesn't look too bad!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Moved three hives onto a field of oil seed rape last evening. All very uneventful apart from falling down an old badger hole three times over in the dark. Back aching a bit this morning. Anyone have a hive barrow or some other way of saving their back? (I must be getting old) Now hoping for...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Good weather, what a change! Great to have a chance to have a quick run around the hives. Two hives in the garden flying well. One nearly out of fondant so added a syrup feeder to see if they'll take down. One I am babysitting looked very good. Loads of pollen coming in. Last one at out...

Have you bought anything in the sales?

First time to Rand too. Went early, picked up pre-order then hung out next to some thirds supers. Managed to get a pack of thirds in the scrum, then wandered around and picked up a few more things. Overall a good fun day.

    Sale time

I think it is only the Rand one showing now on the website. Stockbridge closed on 25th. I went on and ordered last night, could only see open mesh floors (in the sale at least) David

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Went out with the bee inspector last night to look at my two hives, both got a clean bill of health but: Home hive had swarmed, sealed queen cells, damn! So shutting up for three weeks other than hefting for stores. Just keeping a hopeful eye on the weather now for mating flights. Swarm I...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checked the hive in the garden. Few stores in the brood box, but plenty in the super. Lots of bees flying and out, hopefully getting the chance to stock up now that the weather has been better.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Topped up feeder on swarm I recovered on Monday, had a quick peek inside and they've been busily drawing comb, but too windy to have a proper look. Oh, and had a call from the bee inspector, who is coming to take a look at both hives on Monday.

    Gorse bush

Both nectar and pollen, according to Martin Crawford's "Bee Plants". It also has it down as flowering in April and May and I thought it flowered more than that, so I suspect there may be a range of varieties. David

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Got stung! Decided to finish off the apiary fence and gate, after hanging the gate too high in the dark on Saturday evening. Just got it off and started to screw in when one of her ladyship's advance guard pounced. At least I don't seem to over-react to bee stings! David

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Popped to association apiary & picked up my bees. After a bit of scrambling about in the fading light got them set up and opened up. One or two had a quick look but not keen to brave dark! Now have to keep hands off until weekend to let them settle in. V excited!:cheers2:
