I inspected the colonies yesterday. The 2017 queen is not performing well so I am withdrawing it from sale. However the 2018 queen and colony are doing well with 4 frames of brood sufficient stores. Dave 07931 934628

You'll soon know if/when you have a laying queen without going in and disturbing them. They will be bringing in bundles of pollen. If you do have a virgin then she should be left alone for at least 2/3 weeks.

A frame of brood gives them a reason to stay. Although no guarantees in this business!!

Think about what's happening in the hive. Very mild weather, queen still probably laying i.e. no brood less period- varroa multiplying. Wait until end of this month ish. If weather does go cold then treat once ( I use Hiveclean) If weather stays mild then I will give 3 treatments over 21 days...

Just thought I would add my two penny worth: Up until this year I have been running six poly hives and six nationals,all on 14 x 12, in the same location. The polys built up quicker in the spring and produced more honey than the nationals. To me using insulation is a no brainer.
