    OSR (again)

why doesn't it set rock hard agian? When you have warmed and stirred your set OSR honey why doesn't it set again in the jar? Why does it remain soft set? Is it the warming process or the creaming that changes it? Roy EDIT found the answer in another thread!

    Can I freeze oxalic acid?

Thanks for all the advice re: mixing your own. I didn't realise it was so cheap/easy. I've only had OA premixed by my local association before and haven't been able to get hold of it in the Summer. Roy

    Can I freeze oxalic acid?

This is already in solution not crystals. It was picked up from my local association in December so I suppose it's ok for a couple of months. Ray

    Can I freeze oxalic acid?

I have about 250 ml OA left over which might prove useful if I pick up a swarm this summer. I know that OA in solution goes off over time so would it still be effective in 5 or 6 months if I freeze it it the meantime? Thanks Roy

Will the bees clean out mouldy pollen cells?

You are correct - I misread the article on Nosema which, amongst other tips, says ..... 'avoid factors that promote dysentery (e.g. fermented stores, late syrup feeding, damp etc.) ' I'll try and give the combs a bit of a clean then and check how the bees get on with them. Thanks

Will the bees clean out mouldy pollen cells?

Hi, I have about 12 brood frames which the bees cleaned out prior to storing. Unfortunately where there were pockets of pollen left this has gone mouldy/growing fur. Will the bees clean out these few cells themselves ? I don't have a lot of drawn comb so wouldn't want to melt it down unless I...

    winter oxalic treatment

Thanks for the replies Eric and Itma. The solution was made by my local association so it doesn't have a 'best before' date. I assumed the acid would be ok but wasn't sure about the sugar etc but Itma has put me straight on that. Best get some more from Thornes when I go to the sale. Thanks Roy

    winter oxalic treatment

How long does Oxalic acid in solution remain effective? Hi, I bought some Oxalic acid last year already made up in solution. I still have most of it left. Will it still be effective this winter - 12 months after purchase? Thanks Roy

Advice please on how to feed when there is honey in the super

Sound like a plan! Couple of supplementary questions spring to mind :) As this is my first year I do not have any other drawn comb to put in the super - just foundation. Perhaps they'll draw a bit more out? When I've finished feeding should I remove the frames with foundation and put some...

Advice please on how to feed when there is honey in the super

Thanks for the advice. I'd always intended leaving this honey for the bees and already have Apiguard in so I won't be extracting it. Ray

Advice please on how to feed when there is honey in the super

Hi, I'm a new beek this year and this is my first post. I have 2 colonies and 1 has done quite well and has 4 frames full of honey in the super. The rest of the frames are undrawn foundation. The brood box is light so I want to feed them now with a MM jumbo feeder. My question is do I remove...

How much space will my beehives need?

I had thought about the Red Rec but it's a bit of a walk. Hayley suggested the factory roof but I'm not keen on heights! Thanks for the replies. I have joined my local association so will ask advice there too. It would be a shame if the 'bees at the bottom of the garden' idea became a liability...

How much space will my beehives need?

Hi, I've just signed up for a beekeeping course and hope to get some bees next year at the end. At the moment I'm trying to suss out the best place in the garden to put a couple of hives. The area is quite large but there isn't any part of it where we don't go e.g to the greenhouse, veg patch...
