Thanks for the reply MJBee If I shake all the bees off 50yds away, do I presume that the laying worker will not fly back to the original site ?

    Expert diagnosis please

Hi everyone I checked out a friends hive today. This hive swarmed about 6 weeks ago. What I found inside is : Every frame contained only about 15/20 drone cells in a pepperpot pattern. No sign of queen, lots of drones and workers, only drone brood. 3 or 4 empty queen cells. My opinion is, the...

when to move to brood and a half?

Dont want to appear dim, but what is a 14 x 12 ? Presumably it is 14 inches by 12 inches, is that bigger than my Langstroth Jumbos ?

Please remind me, why use hoffman frames?

Sorry, I didnt mean wrong in the sense of incorrect, although it was originally posted " then you never have to leave a frame outside during an inspection " this , to me anyway, implied it was not a good idea.I was trying to understand why it might not be a good idea to leave a frame outside, I...

    New Queen swarming

A good point RAB. I intend to recommend they are requeened next year anyway, at least everybody is happy they have their beehives. All part of the learning curve I guess.

Please remind me, why use hoffman frames?

Whats wrong with leaving a frame outside ? Makes a lot more room to avoid squishing bees.

    1st Sting

There was a guy over here killed by a sting from a hornet last year. He had been stung the year before as well and I was told that makes the second sting more potentially dangerous.

    New Queen swarming

Several of the hives I purchased from my local French beekeeper have since swarmed. I expected to get nucs when I ordered them but they turned out to be full size, with QE and one super. The hives had plenty of bees in them but they seemed reluctant to go up in the super. The QE was one of those...

    Use by?

Here in France the beekeeping supplies shop sells ready made syrup with an additive called "BeeVit" in it. They get it in autumn and it sits in their shop until sold, which could be weeks or months.

    Reactions to stings

I got stung some years ago, just above my left eye. Whole left side of my face swelled up, looked like the Elephant man ! In the end it required an operation to remove excess skin from my left top eyelid, so that I could see out of that eye. I do usually swell up and the nearest joint locks up...

    Lots of hives

All the hives are now resident with other English people living here in France and doing well. I bought a plastic ventilated floor from him - 8 euros.

    Lots of hives

150 euros ( about 135 quid ) plus another 15 euros for an extra super. Eleven hives picked up and the only person who got stung was the seller !!

    When do you say enough?

When I lived in UK, I hived a swarm I found on my fence panel one day. They turned out to be the most aggressive bees I have ever seen. In my built up area situation I had no choice but to kill off the whole hive using a petrol soaked rag shoved in the entrance. Our garden was 100 feet long and...

I hope so, as this is the hive that swarmed five times and has hardly any bees left in it. Going to check them tomorrow.

    Mating flights

Hi everyone I observed hundreds of Bees milling around in front of the hive today. Thought they were going to swarm but they didnt. After a while they all settled down and normal service was resumed. There is a new queen in there, did I just observe a mating flight ? I didnt see them fly up...
