Oh to bee a Mead Maker

I’m making mead and I understand that when it is racked from one demijohn to another, the resulting air gap has to be filled. What do I use?

No fun being a bee farmer

I'm soooo pleased it's now working out for you and thanks for letting us know. It would be interesting to know your thoughts on how you've turned it around.

I get mine sent to work and then bring it home in easy stages!

    OSR Nantwich

Yes I've seen this field at the week end. I think it's mustard but it's quite tall at 2 - 3ft. OSR has only just been planted

    MAQS single strips

If you're anywhere near Tarvin then John van Suchtelen sells an individual hive dose for (I think) £5. Full of free advice too.

    Manchester Printworks Rooftop Hives

Well thanks for clearing that up Dusty. I watched Granada and thought YOU were the bloke from Happy Mondays. Must be nice to be a celeb, watch someone else do your beekeeping for you and still get all the attention from the media.

    De-capping Method

Tryed using a hot air gun but the wax re-seals the cells. Any tips as to where I'm going wrong as it seems a good idea?

How to combine a nuc to a hive ?

As mentioned before, put a test frame in first. You could have a superseded queen in there.

No more Tin on Roof for me??

I have tin galv and alu clad hive roofs. In the strong sun the steel roofs feel hot but the alu ones are cool. Why is that? Is it something about reflective qualities?

    apidea

What’s the idea of doing this?
  11. E

    New addition to the apiary.

I’m envious. I dream of just such a set-up as yours (but probably end up with bathroom scales). I want to weigh them morning and evening every day to record the weight gain for that day and again next morning to see how much water has been evaporated from the nectar overnight.

    T'****s sale

I placed an order over the phone because their website was over busy. The man said to expect a two week delivery period so that is what I am expecting. I suppose they can't explane that on the web

    tattoos?

A woman goes into a tattoo parlour and says, “In two weeks time I’m going to marry a man who is mad about bees. Can you tattoo a bee on each cheek of my arse?” “Certainly.” Says the tattoo artist. “I can fit you in now.” On the wedding night the beekeeper is sat in bed waiting for his new wife...

    Queen Frame Trap for Varroa

I must say, Dr Stitson, that I had not considered a horizontal frame as a queen trap. Does the queen lay both sides with the frame oriented that way?

    Heather move pics uploaded

ITLD Very interesting pics. Colonies seem to vary in size, (supers seem to be brood box size) do you take all colonies for their winter feed? When do you do varroa treatment? Very smart equipment too, must take some doing.

    General Husbandry

Well done for passing Tim. Was it really that hard? I'm thinking of doing mine next year and although I've done the written modules, I'm really not looking forward to it. Any tips or ideas on how to approach it would be most gratefully received.

What is your 'buzz' about keeping bees?

Has to be queen rearing. The next one out might be perfect!

    Introducing virgin queens

I tried introducing a protected queen cell to 5 hives this year to enforce supersedure. Only 1 seems to have worked.

Work Experience as a Bee Farmer (23 to 27 April)

Excellent series and very interesting to learn a little of how it should be done. I’ve often thought a spell with a bee farmer would either kill or cure me and teach me to speed up a bit. Thanks for posting.
