    Honey room floor

I am setting up a Honey Room and would be interested to know what others have used for flooring. I need something that is easy to clean but also a surface that my extractor won’t damage. I am considering tiling the floor with large tiles but what have others done? Thanks

    Thorne jar filling set up

I purchased this machine 2 years ago and can honestly say it’s one of the best pieces of kit I own. It fills jars accurately to within +/- 2g and has saved me hours of work. It operates using compressed air and I already owned a compressor so had no additional cost to incur. The compressor...

    Honey Creaming machines

Thank you, a couple of questions. How do you fill the water jacket? looking at the images the top opener appears to point downwards? What control do you have over the temperature? It doesn’t appear to be digitally controlled so is it a case of gauging the temperature between its min and max...

    Honey Creaming machines

Thank you, I had wondered whether the motor would get in the way a little, I’m sure I can work around that. I’m not worried about the gate size, I’m not planning on bottling direct from the machine. I hadn’t originally thought about using it for mixing sugar syrup but it sounds a good idea.

Thank you, all useful information. I assume you are using it to turn granulated honey back to liquid, creaming honey …. Anything else?

    Honey Creaming machines

I am looking to purchase a 50l Honey Creamer and liquefier. I am currently considering the ‘Abelo Honey Creamer and Liquefier Machine’ or the ‘Konigin Creamer (KREMLIN-50-F)’ What are people’s experiences with these? Are there any other machines on the market I am overlooking? I am looking...

    Uncapping knife versus uncapping fork.

I use an electric / heated uncapping knife and an uncapping fork for any bits missed by the knife. It works well for me.

    Warming cabinet heater.

The tubular heaters have a bi-metallic strip (internally) which regulates the temperature. I have managed to open up the tubes and bypass the strip but not recommended unless you have an alternative thermostat fitted and know what you are doing. I would add that I scrapped the first one I tried...

How small a gap can a wax moth get through

I stack in (indoors / under cover) with a sheet of newspaper on the base of the stack and a sheet between every box and on the top of the stack with a Queen excluder of similar on the top sheet and I’ve never had a problem.

    Veil advice

I have my hive orientated such that when I do my inspections, typically in the afternoon, the sun is behind me. I find this makes it a lot easier to see eggs and generally have a better view of the frames.

    Tobacco smoke

Before Varroa was present in the UK we did on occasion have Braula in our hives. From memory Braula were more of an irritant than a threat to the bees and I can remember adding tobacco to the ashes of my smoker and then smoke the bees reasonably heavily and it killed the braula. Since the...
