2 queenless colonies following hive move

I tried moving my bees to a new site. 1 hive 1 nuc. It was not far away from the former site so i plugged the entrance with grass and put some branches in front so they'd find their way out then reorientate. I popped back a few days later to check all is well and found they had not managed to...

    grumpy bees following split

Hi My single colony started producing queen cells as soon as i moved it into my back garden last week. I performed a nuc method split - taking the queen, some brood, food and some bees into the nuc and leaving queen cells in the original hive to produce a new one. That was 4 days ago...

    Transporting a hive

Hi all - I'm looking for some advice on moving my bees. I'm moving house from London to Bristol and want to take my (one) hive of bees with me. They are currently in a poly national hive - as I thought this would be lighter to lift. As the weather is cooling down now - is it necessary to use a...

    Maqs - bad news

Hi. Not really a question but a heads up. I removed the supers and treated my one colony with maqs. It’s killed off all the brood and the queen! Perhaps the hot weather has t helped. I’m getting a new mated queen asap. Wondered what experience others have had with maqs?

    combining using newspaper

Hi I have made a bit of a cock up - and now need some help to sort it out ASAP! I wanted to combine a 14x12 brood box with no queen - with a 6 frame nuc with a good queen. I transferred the nuc to a 14x12 but forgot I'd need spare frames to fill it up and put the full 14 x 12 on top of the...

    Looking for out apiary

Hi all I am about to move house and I would like to move my bees when i go. Ideally i would like to find some space away from the house. How does one go about finding space for an out apiary? Are there any options for using waste ground or is that completely illegal? Thanks

    Friendly breeds

Hi We are considering whether to requeen a hive that is a bit defensive - all options are open at the moment and we are trying different ways of handling them etc. But - if i do go ahead and re-queen, are there particular breeds that have a reputation for being more placid, easygoing than others?

    black nitrile gloves

I have just bought a box of black nitrile gloves as the blue vinyl ones i had were too thin and i kept getting stung. I have just read somewhere that bees dont like black though - oh bum! Is the thing about bees not likeing black true or a myth? and have i made a mistake?

    Fondant question

I have put some fondant on my hive as there wasnt much in the way of stores. But I was wondering what happens to it - do the bees convert it into stores in each cell or just eat it from the pack? If it gets converted and put in the cells, does 1kg fondant = 1kg of stores?

Persistent charged queen cups after merging colonies

Hi I merged two colonies 4 weeks ago. Since the merge the colony has been expanding nicely but producing queen cups, with eggs and royal jelly, in the centre of one or two of the frames every week. I read up about it and some books advise that these are probably supercedure cells as the bees...
