    Gloves

Supertouch Nitrile gauntlets. https://www.safetygloves.co.uk/supertouch-nitrile-n15-latex-free-washing-up-gloves.html Sting proof (well, almost!) and sensitive enough to do the necessary manipulations. Cheap too.

Sold 6 thriving colonies in full National hives

I have 6 thriving colonies of bees available for sale immediately. All headed by 2021 local queens. 4 are in Abelo poly hives, 2 are in Paynes poly, 3 overwintered on double brood, 3 on brood and half. All standard National. All treated for varroa with Maqs in early September and OA vap in mid...

    Removing empty supers from hive!

Exactly the same here. Hold the faith, the warmth is coming. Maybe.

    Alternative to boiling infested frames?

I bought a Burco to boil frames this year. Did 10. Sold it for the same price I paid for it. Add up the cost of the electricity, the cost of the soda, the time, the grotty jobness of it all ....quicker and cheaper (probably) to make up new frames, but recycle the wax of course.

Abelo poly hive, old style v new.

I drilled 5-6mm holes through the plastic frame "into" the hive as drain holes, one at each corner. Works well. I have a few new ones with the notches but looks like I need to do the same with them!

    Two year anniversary today!

I am on my 2 year anniversary today as well! Didn't realise how much thinking time, doing time, shed space, garden space (including the neighbours!) it would take up! It was warm then I recall!

    Drone Laying Worker?

    Drone Laying Worker?

Thought so re options. Thanks Dani. No laying workers. Don’t think I said there were. No laying anything in fact! I know there was a new queen in there from August and assume she had started to lay worker brood simply due to the large number of bees (9 or 10 busy frames) but by the time I looked...

    Drone Laying Worker?

Got round to shaking out the drone laying queen colony today. Gave them a while as it’s been so cold and to see if it might sort itself! No hope, but I knew that. Despite there being no sign of a queen of any sort, only drone brood, almost all sealed there was a huge amount of bees. Find it...

    Drone Laying Worker?

Checked some of my hives today. One seems to have a drone laying queen. She was a late supercedure last August. With no drone brood let alone drones in my other colonies it’s either merge ( assuming I can find and remove the queen) or shakeout. Apart from the obvious queen problem the colony...

Art or Firewood ? Be honest ...

You did well to achieve a decent finish on wood that riddled with holes. Surprised it didnt collapse on itself. As a fellow turner I would say the finial is a bit tall for the box which being a bit rustic, could do with maybe some sort of knob on the end! However, decent job, I would be happy...

    Filtering wax

I use an old slow cooker and J cloths. Not got round to melting down the oval discs produced yet but they are fairly clean already, just a scrape of the base.

    Hobbies?

Mountaineering and rock climbing, cycling (on and off road ), wood turning, astrophotography, fishing (mostly kayak based for pike, bass and tope but also fly for trout and grayling, river bank for barbel). Used to run a lot but knackered ankle. Jack of all trades, master of none!

    Apibioxal error ....

RTFM! How many times did I say that (or similar!) to former chemistry pupils?

    Apibioxal error ....

Sadly not got the kit to do so ... but considering it as an option!

    Apibioxal error ....

OK folks, made a schoolboy error yesterday. Attempted to make up a 3.2% apibioxal solution today and should have added 20g to 395ml 1:1 syrup. In a hurry, I did 395ml water and 395g sugar .... which is more like 650ml syrup! It did cross my mind to use just 395ml of the resulting syrup solution...
