    2frame nuc swarming?

No. I asked him, and he said he doesn't have a computer and hates the things, so i wouldn't think so

    2frame nuc swarming?

Not long after my last post, I recived an email telling me to ignore anything this guy says about nuc's... Apparently he's not all with it since a mental breakdown a few years back. Apparently he was once one of the best local bee keepers, and had 50 of his own hives, and tended just about all...

    2frame nuc swarming?

You'd have thought so. He claims not. Apparently he just puts a frame of honey and a frame of young brood and eggs with a qc, in the box and lets them get on with it. Apparently the nuc just survive, with a fairly steady population, but that just doesn't sound like bees to me. Tbh, I recon he's...

    2frame nuc swarming?

That's what I thought, but this guy was so adamant, and says he's been doing it so long, I wondered if he knew something I didn't... And when I couldn't find anything on google, I decided to ask... To be honest sounds almost as daft as using an oni-mask to keep evil spirits from making home in...

    2frame nuc swarming?

Really stupid question :sorry: I've been talking to a local keeper about queen raising, requeening and splitting hives for increase and swarm control. Actually a really good chat. I learned a lot about bee keeping in general but one things got me stumped. This guy seemed to genuinely believe...

    swarm warning buzz

Having done some more reading, knowing what I'm looking for is called an apidictor, its apparently a warble (alternating tones) rather than a buzz, and a hiss when the hive is tapped. With this knowledge and a little bit of work, I reckon I can make a device to listen for this and let me know :)...

    swarm warning buzz

Jwf - yeh, its the 2 week(ish) warning I was on about :) Thanks for that alldigging :) looks like exactly what I was looking for Google just couldn't seem to find anything :(

    swarm warning buzz

Hi guys, I've been told that shortly before swarming, the bees give a distinctive buzzing sound, so reliably that there are even apps that can listen to it and provide warning. Is this true? And what is this buzz like? I'm building a hive monitoring system into my hive, and if this I true, id...

    Position of bait boxes

would i be in trouble for simply saying "outside"? lol In all seriousness, ask something like that and everyones answer will be diffrent. A friend of mine used to keep his bait box's up in the roof space of his barn. Apparently, if he didn't have the bait box up there, and a swarm came past...

    DIY starter strips/foundation

Hi all I've just found this video which shows how to make a DIY foundation or starter strip. I found it very informative, and will be using this method in my hive next year for a trial run :) (only a few frames, the rest i'll do as normal) I would do it this year, but I lack the wax, and the...

    Taffy (and maybe bee feed?)

Thanks for the link... I should have remembered from uni that boiling honey increases conversation to hmf... Thanks for the link :) that was an interesting read. I guess its just a human sweet then

    Taffy (and maybe bee feed?)

Saw this little gem today. basically, you heat your honey to soft crack stage (140 degrees Celsius or about 285 degrees Fahrenheit) Spread it on a tray. Keep moving it around until its "warm" and forms a manipulable mound. butter hands, and keep pulling/twisting/folding your honey until it goes...

    Queen cells argh!

I know. It was mealy meant to put a smile on faces and make light of what could have been a serious situation (but was rather a disaster avoided) :)

Queen cups..you know how to spoil a holiday! Urgent thoughts needed.

See if a friend near by can keep an eye on them, and do a split if needed? That's really bad timing :/

    Queen cells argh!

Yay I'm really pleased for you. One of the queen cells obviously came through :) now just watch out for swarms lol

    Queen cells argh!

is your stronger hive strong enough that losing a brood frame wont cause an issue? if so, I'd agree with birdsandbees, it may just provoke them to build a few stronger queen cells. On the other hand, if the stronger hive wont handle it, dont hurt your second hive to try and help a weaker hive

    Another shameful act of vandalism

why? just why? :( I cant belive I'm saying this, But I think someone needs to build a vandal proof hive... It shouldnt be needed, but this mindless killing of one of earths most amazing creatures by a group who are hardly removed from apes has to stop

    Queen cells argh!

I hope this helps QC guide I've not even finished building my hive yet, so am rather inexperienced, but that guide was sent to me by a friend when I said I wanted to start bee keeping, and its been an interesting read... In my opinion, they look like they could be emergency queen cells, But...
