    Hot knife trick

Well, I either give it back to the bees.... or spread it on hot buttered toast. Sacriledge I know as cappings ar the most delicate and purest wax. (but yummy also).

    Hot knife trick

shut-up as that's an old trick from way back. Been doing it for years. However, well done for finding it out by yourself. If you don't do so already, a serrated knife is heaps better.

    Powerpoint presentation

Many thanks! PMs sent. Looked at the thread PD suggested, I think in view of the audience involved, the bit about drones is compulsory...:):)

    Powerpoint presentation

Evening all, I am putting together a PP presentation for a talk I will be giving to the local WI next month. I think I have most of what I need but wondered if anyone had done one of these before and whether they could forward me any material I might find useful. I am keeping things fairly...

    Breakdown of Honey`

If you have a look at Wikipedia, and type "sugar" and then "honey" into the search box, you will get a neat little table further down the RH side of the page.

    The best laid plans........

"The message, no matter how well behaved you think your bees are and how expert a beekeeper you think you are, all it takes is one sting to show that beekeeping in a back garden or on an allotment site is an accident waiting to happen." ... rather a sweeping statement: depends on the location...

    Attracted to salt?

Gilles Fert, in his book on queen raising, recommends adding salt to the water bucket you put out for them. I also noticed recently they were all over the horse manure next to the compost heap, so I made up 3 buckets of bee water: 1: water with a drop of peppermnint oil, as recommended in...

    Bees build their own entrance

Now all they need is an entrance and exit sign.

    Switches

1)Don't forget that in the case of some switches, like two way switches, ie stair lights which can be switched from upstirs and downstairs, one of them will always be the "wrong way round". In the US, light switches all seem to be opposite to ours. 2) Pensioners should only be allowed in...

    Arnia Hive Monitor

I turned my trial down in the end, as it seemed a fun thing to try out, but not £60.00 per hive fun. Will be following any trial results with interest though.

    Bees build their own entrance

I was going to post the same question, as two of my nucs have done the same thing - never seen anything like it: small holes yes, but never anythnig so large; will try and get a piccie later when the rain stops.

    Hoselock type plastic fittings

The problem I have had is not the female/male joint but the thread between the locknut and the fitting, hence my ptfe suggestion. Also I have had more than one O ring fail in the past. ... so it would appear they are even more carp than we thought at first, as we seem to have different problems!

    Hoselock type plastic fittings

I have the same problem, as I am sure many others do. I resolved the issue by: 1) Using a bit of PTFE tape on the thread fitting, the amount you use will depend on how poor the thread tolerances are, or 2) Save up & buy the brass ones, much better!

    queen balled

:iagree: Also I can't help thinking there must be a correlation between what's mentioned above and the sheer volume of swarms this year, much higher than other years (in my area anyway).

    queen balled

Interesting thread. I thought I was alone or had gone senile and had forgotten something essential to queen introduction 101. I have had queens disappear (5 x of last year's new queens) in April/May, virgins mate then disappear after laying their first patch of eggs, established queens vanish...

    another dodgey £bay offer

If ebay's rules were logical and even-handed across the board to begin with there wouldn't be any of this type of circumventing. Also don't forget the "Collect in person" option. When I sell bees, I try and sell locally only, and when I buy livestock from ebay, I do my best to collect locally...

    another dodgey £bay offer

I wrote to ebay in February of this year, as I have bought marine shrimp, fish, and coral as well as livestock for my pond and tropical tanks, and wanted to know why bees were not allowed. Here is a copy and paste of their reply: Please consider that out of safety and welfare concerns for the...
