Soft set from recently extracted honey

“For creaming you need to warm the solid set honey gently but enough to make it pliable, but not so much that there is runny honey around the edges - this leads to frosting in the jars. Once pliable, cut with a pallette knife (or similar) then mash vigorously - we use a giant potato masher from...

    Honey storage

How do others store their jarred honey to minimise/delay crystallisation. I try to jar as needed but sometimes I see it crystallised where it’s being sold. Do others keep jarred honey in the cold garage or a cool room, warm room with c/h, airing cupboard… is it different for soft set? (made...

    Over wintering an apedia

I have an apedia with a mated & laying queen. Thinking of experimenting of insulating it well, adding feed as needed and seeing if it will over winter. Bit of an experiment! Has anyone tried this?

    Fondant v syrup

Previous years I have made up & fed syrup. It’s a faff! Does anyone just feed fondant from the outset. I was thinking of putting on say 5kg and leaving them to it… job done! Thoughts, does it work ok?

    Renewing/replacing comb without waste.

Why do you use old stuff for demarees?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

How long do you find it takes the bees to clear a nadired super? I’ve tended to leave mine on over the winter, saves storage.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Same here but wasps! The wasps have found a way into my honey extraction shed… agh. Being at the end of the season my car inside has lots of bee poo all over the doors & windows…. any tips for bee poo removal?

    Supers & Apivar

If you plan to use Apivar but also want to leave a full super which will be empty by spring (nadiring) for the bees over winter then how do you manage this arrangement? Some say it’s ok to leave supers on whilst treating so long as no honey left in spring others say not!

    Puzzled

I have a hive on brood & a half. The queen refuses to lay in the BB even after I have moved a couple of ‘super’ frames with brood from the half to the BB. It’s not all old comb in the BB and never had this situation before. So whilst the BB has bees on it moping around absolutely no brood on...

    Swapping Apedia boxes around

I have 3 apedias in a row, one with mated Q other two are Q- as have used the mated Q 2 days ago to a Q- hive. The other has just nurse bees & is low on numbers. I plan to swap the two Q- boxes around, any issues? Thanks

    Bees not making QCs

I’ve just taken a mated queen from an apedia. It was a virgin Q from a QC that emerged in my chicken incubator . Never mind 3 or 5 framed nucs im wondering if with the Q gone they will throw up some QC’s in the apedia, which I can then harvest.

    Demaree queens

I plan next week to take the top boxes off my demarees (over a month old) removing the upper entrance and extract the full honey frames and then revert to normal hive. If any have laying Q’s in the top BB could I just remove the older bottom Q & replace immediately?
  18. E

    Demaree

Even with a ‘demaree board’ and potentially a new Q in the top box!

    Demaree

If bees in the bottom BB of a demaree are short of stores would they venture to the very top BB to take down, when the middle 2 supers have little stores as either extracted or consumed, whilst the top BB remains heavy with honey.

    Ending a demaree

The pic showing some of my demarees, bees on the front are just from inspections-not swarming!
