    Rust in Extractor

Whilst moving some kit around I’ve noticed the extractor has developed a little bit of rust. Its all in the same place and runs along the join. I was sure that it was dry when I put it into storage, but I guess not. Anyone know the safe way to remove this before it gets worse? I’m conscious of...

    Mated queens by post

I cant really help here. But due to a distrust in reliable postal services, I do not order anything where weekend deliveries are likely. You are always let down :(

    Abelo rebate?

Mine is definitely 13mm across the top. Not 10mm as your image indicates. It looks like 12mm but there is slight curvage. Hard to get an accurate pic.

    Abelo rebate?

    It’s 13mm wide and 10mm tall/deep.

    Abelo rebate?

So for the 12 frame ABELO poly hive the rebate measures 46cm x 46cm. The boxes themselves are 48.5cm x 48.5cm The clearer boards that I made last year are as below and sat on top of the rebate, with the boxes above locking in. They worked very well. Is that sufficient or do you want other...

    Theft prevention

I considered adding AirTags hidden within a hive. I’m led to believe they will only assist you finding the hives again, if they are within Bluetooth range (10ft/30m) of ANY iPhone. If apple modified them to work with any Bluetooth enabled device I think they would be worth considering.

    Abelo rebate?

I’ll be home in an hour and will do the measurements then. :)

    Abelo rebate?

If no one replies by the time I get home from work tomorrow I’ll measure the 12 frame hive for you. Out of curiosity, what parts are you making? I was debating making an underfloor entrance with a rebate to fit my 12 frame hives.

    Infused Honey

Not sure how it would work with whiskey, but I drowned my cappings last year in rum overnight, before passing them through some mesh. It cleaned the cappings lovely and provided two bottles of honey infused rum.

    So then, mead...

I’m informed you should let it mature for a minimum of 6 months before drinking. I have 25 bottles of 5 different flavours on the go. I sampled the excess and found it to be very potent :)

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Two of mine are incredibly heavy. Going to be opening them on Saturday and taking out as much excess stores as I can. I am not winning (loosing) being the first to have their bees swarm.

    Fondant vs natural stores question.

Do bees have a preference for one over the other? I’ve very quickly checked my bees today, just by quickly lifting the top and hefting. All the hives feel pretty heavy but the fondant is running low. I’m wondering if they went for the fondant first over their natural stores. Fondant was added...

Cold torpor - how long until terminal ?

I’ve picked up a bee that appeared dead, that I saw 3-4 hours earlier in the same state. Between my hands she warmed up and flew off in a few minutes.

    OA vaping timings.

Thanks very much :) that’s the plan sorted then.

    OA vaping timings.

Good afternoon. I treated with Apivar strips at the end of August and planned to to OA vape in winter. My understanding of the “ideal” time was when it’s cold enough that the bees are not flying but warm enough that they aren’t too tightly clustered. Until last week the bees were still...

    Hardiest bees?

Mine are out in all weather. 7-8 degrees the other day and they were coming back with pollen. Any break in rain and boom they go out again. Live fast die young.

    Cautiously optimistic newbie!

Welcome. I love your photos! I’d be so proud of them if they were mine. Love your plans. Best of luck to you. I’m not jealous at all.

    Droning on

I’m still seeing drones in south Essex. I’m assuming it’s because of the weather as the bees are still fairly active. My weather app is telling me it’s 17 degrees at the high point today. Guess that’s pretty unusual for mid November

    Making mead as another hobby

I have 5 batches on the go. They have all done their fermentation and are now just aging. No idea if they are drinkable but they look pretty enough.
