    Bug killer

My fruit trees are being decimated by Black fly and I expect Greenfly will follow. What treatment could I use that would not kill my bees. I am thinking of a dilute wash of Savon Noir (Its a French Black Soap liquid made from olive and other oils). The mix would be 5 soup spoons / litre of...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Upside down colony First visit after winter as its been cold here. Lifted off the super that they were feeding on over winter and remains of the APIFONDA bag. All looked busy, so left them alone. Removed the queen excluder then - Started frame inspection in the brood box, plenty of honey...

    Honey extraction

You could cut it up, comb and all and enjoy it on hot toast. The wax is quite edible.

    APIFONDA Feeding

Re temperatures here in SW France, nightime is dropping to -2C some nights and daytime not much more than 14. All 3 of my hives were new swarms this year in May. One hive only got going when the Ivy pollen was about, making 10 super frames of honey and plenty of stores in the brood box. The...

    APIFONDA Feeding

I have put a slab of Apifonda on top of the brood frames in a DADANT hive, but have had to put a 2" spacer frame on top of the brood box then the top board. This leaves a lot of air space. Will the bees get cold ? Will the bees try to fill the space with comb? Would it have been preferable to...

    Queen excluder washing

Dip QE into hot solution of washing soda. If you need a big container, turn a roof section upside down and put a big sheet of polythene inside it, then flood with the washing soda. Leave the QE in solution for 30 mins then wash in clean water.

    Bee suits ?

Look for a suit with the helmet where there is a velcro strap between head piece and jacket where you can adjust just how far forward the helmet can tip. Otherwise fit a strap of velcro like we did. Also think about jacket + trousers instead of a combination set. When you are confident only...

    Death Head Hawk Moth

This is the first time I have ever seen one of these moths and the internet says that they like potato (Leaves) and honey. Apparently the moth gives off an odour which makes the bees accept the intruder. The top of the head looks like a skull - hence the name. Also known as the Pool Moth. He...

Hello there, My name is Bob Humphrey and I have been keeping bees for 3 years here in SW France. Have had limited success with a little honey produced most years. Last winter was a disaster, and I lost 4 hives which were disease free and was thought to be due to a warm February, the bees...
