Are we damaging our lungs by inhaling smoke?

I did question it in my mind last year, and I must add I hate sitting in traffic or following fumey cars. But after thinking about it I'd say Certainly won't do you any favours, but then look at it this way you keep bees your hardly sat in the pub beer garden smoking a *** and drinking several...

    Which poly nuc?

deep roof on masie throws the vote in their favour. BS is a bee squisher far worse than masie I started with masie nucs then ordered a few bs nucs and the bs nucs will be going not as good as masie. only benefit is bs are stronger.

    demaree question

To save posting a separate thread, I have just done the Demerara method on a hive to stop swarming I also took a few frames for a nuc. Now what I'm unsure is can I simply put the brood box back to the bottom in a few weeks or do I have to mess about like as if I'm reuniting them?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Added another brood box to a 6frame nuc it's now 3xbrood bit worried about moving them to wood while weather still got cold nights ahead. They were filling the roof space of the poly nuc. Next warm day il have to check a couple of the heaviest hives for any swarm plans, as there are lots of...

    Beading

Open mesh floor they were only stood aside for a couple of hours. Yet they decided to stay there all night, obviously they're don't look to clever now. I will have to pop lid (as much as I don't want to) as it's a clear cb but I don't think they were that short of space. Full of mysteries...

    Beading

So I stood a poly nuc aside yesterday eve while I done a job, I put both back yesterday night and left them shut in got home this eve and thought I best let them out, 18:30ish. They have now decided tonight is a good time to bead the front of the nuc, despite me telling them it's going to get...

    Bee hives and ponds

Hi all A little query before I start digging. So I did notice in a thread there was mention of colonies failing and lots of theory's basing it on being near a pond and damp mist. I assume this was said because the pond in question and hives were in a dip, and the pond was believed to be a...

Overwinter poly nucs adding a extra box

Sounds like we're both in same boat, I don't want to go digging about either so unfortunately I can't let you know what I see Ian it's too early to risking squishing queen for my liking. I've not squished one yet but I feel there are a few other risks of moving frames around. I guess this is a...

Overwinter poly nucs adding a extra box

Hi all another newbie dilemma (I should know by now but options are helpful) I managed to get 3 poly nucs through or so far, Nuc 1 was started earlier 6 frame and added extra 6 brood on top which they filled with stores pre winter they never touched fondant, will wait until April to move to a...

Dozy dying bees not quite getting home with pollen

Hi all Got a bit of a puzzle of the two sites in the garden one of the sites has three hives. There is a lot of dozy and dead bees mostly with pollen, 90% of them are at the back of the hives, most notably on the centre hive some are on top of the hives a few small groups of 10-20 bees but...

    Boxes and Frames

It sounds awfully nice if it was as simple as moving the dummy board back a little and they would all move so easily a bit like how easy it all sounds in the books. I can see the idea behind running 11 with the board and if it worked like you mentioned I'd do that for sure, maybe I should try...

    Boxes and Frames

why not 12? they certainly fit, yes it maybe tight and hard to get them out. But I use 12 and I'm in no hurry to use a dummy board it creates places for nasties from what I've seen. Need a valid reason for not using 12? Hoffman in brood box.

    Sting Proof Bee Suit

Yes I did mean the sentinel, as others have said if you just stand like a lemon you probably won't get stung but once you start moving about lift and placing supers that's when you will unless you have a layer underneath. The gloves again brilliant no sweaty hands and wrists but I have been...

    Sting Proof Bee Suit

It is not sting proof at all you will need disposable gloves underneath their gloves or you will get stung through and unless you have clothing underneath you may get stung. Basically if wearing shorts you may still get stung I have been twice arm and leg but I wear it a lot in t shirt and...

No eggs will workers not always lay

Well after lots of messing about knowing it's a goner last weekend workers had attempted q/c without eggs this was a prolific buckfast from a big supplier... Another nuc that was destined to fail had a queen but by the time I'd realised and planned to place her in the bigger hive she was also...
