Is this the swarmiest spring ever?

It's possible that the increase in swarms is a knock on effect from lockdown. Lots of new beekeepers with no experience and no club meetings or club apiary training. Beekeeping seemed a good hobby to take up during lockdown. Maybe with lives becoming busy again Beekeeping has been put aside...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Enjoyed a sunny day inspecting the bees. The supers were very heavy. Looks like a good spring harvest this year. No OSR this year 🙂

    Bees in garden advice

I have my bees in the same field as the horses, and they have got along fine for the past 12 years. The two Hives are separated from the horses by a 6ft fence to encourage the bees to fly up and high across the field. However these are gentle colonies and I inspect them weekly as part of my...

Does Oil Seed Rape make bees difficult?

Hi oxnatbees, Yes, from what I have experienced with my bees on OSR They have problems navigating, as you say returning in a 'wobbly' way, missing the hive entrance. They become irritable and not their calm and happy selves. I would say even hostile and aggressive. More likely to want to sting...

    Question re winter losses

No. All I am asking is Did anyone feed HiveAlive to their colonies last year and still suffer significant losses. If no one did then that's fine.

    Question re winter losses

All my colonies survived the winter and are currently working really well. They are all on National Brood and a half plus one super. Last year I fed my bees HiveAlive for the first time, and so far am pleased with the results. My question is this Did anyone feed HiveAlive to their colonies...

MB Queen Trap Anti Swarm Device

I did use one of these on a hive that I had in a lady's garden. I use polystyrene hives. I was going on holiday so didn't want to return to find the Bees had swarmed and upset neighbours. Incidentally I no longer have bees in her garden as it became too much hassle. Anyway I returned from my...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

With temperatures here safely past 15°C. I inspected all my colonies for the first time this year. They all survived the winter with plenty of stores left over. All on 6 frames of brood or more. All Queen right. Cleaned the frames up a little, and tidied up around the hives. So a good start to...

    Giving up bee keeping!

Waiting for your children to grow up and leave home isn't the answer. Reason being that as soon as they are old enough to have children of their own, and you have grandchildren visiting, your wife will be even more insistent that the garden remains bee free. (Learned from personal experience)...

BeeBase, the Good the Bad and the Ugly !

I think there are far too many unregistered beekeepers for beebase to be really effective. Just thinking of all the swarms we collect from unknown sources. I don't think it will change even if a law was passed insisting on hives being registered. A person with a hive behind the garage producing...

    Roller Garage door.

Just the fact that they are draught proof makes a major difference. They are great in keeping bees out of your garage space. Once closed they are bee proof (or mine is).

    Hive Alive

How did the bees get into the feeders? All my feeders have lids on. (Mainly to prevent robbing)

    Cleaning a Konigin extractor

I wrap plastic bags around the electrical parts and have attached some garden hose to the tap so that I can clean it from inside. If that makes sense

    Bees up early today.

Our sunflowers were planted by my 6 year old. He had a packet of seeds which I told him to plant in the garden. He disappeared outside to plant them. He came back indoors 10 minutes later Saying "Done it daddy" ! He had mixed them in with the tomatoes which this year suffered badly with blight...

    Bees up early today.

I was in the garden very early this morning watering the vegetables, and observed bees on the Fushsia flowers. Not long and my sunflowers will be in blossom 😀
