Need help choosing my 1st hive

the national is the smallest, i spent about 9 years with nationals and have moved onto 14x 12s bigger brood area for queen laying, more space to store food for winter, i would suggest that i have less swarms with them, national frames are easier to handle, one problem with 14x12's, they are more...

When is the best time to rehive?

when its warm enough and there is a flow on, oil seed rape here. if doing a complete re hive, then place your 14x12 hive above the old national one and feed syrup, your honey supply will suffer, but i prefer 14x12s and didnt have swarms last year.

    Changing Comb

agree, cos the bees love the warmth when building wax, in my opinion, so putting foundation on top is much more likely to be drawn out with the heat from the hive rising to the top box, than putting new wax alongside the older wax.

    beekeeping only for rich folks?

no, i know of someone who started keeping bees in wooden shoe boxes, many years ago but it can still be done today. You dont need all the fancy equipment, make yourself a top bar hive from recycled timber, before bee hives they were kept in straw baskets.
