Where does dark honey come from?

As per the title really:rolleyes: I saw some VERY dark honey at the Royal Welsh Show and just wondering what the bees work to produce it. I read some old posts that suggest it's from honeydew, would this be the only source? Cheers Huw

    No Queen.

:iagree: If they are 100% Q- then buying in a mated queen will save you several weeks, time needed to produce winter bees;) Edit: Tom Bick types faster than me :D

    Eggs :)

Already has by the sounds of it;) Great news on the sealed brood Greengumbo, glad she mated well for you. Don't be in too much of a rush to transfer into a full hive although they will need it soon if all the frames have brood. Something to watch out for is the comb being blocked with stores...

    dusting bees with icing sugar

I tried sugar dusting earlier this year. It did knock a few mites off BUT the bees quickly found the sugar on the varroa floor and started to collect it. It was too much hastle to bother with again. I've also used hiveclean this year (whilst supers are on). It certainly kills the mites but...

Bees filling gap with propolis ( PHOTOS)

Great photosnot worthy the first boxes i made i was really fussy about fitting everything sbugly together. The i realised just how good the bees are at sealing little gaps like this. Nuc building is much faster now ;)

Do Bees forage close to home

I read somewhere that bees don't forrage close to home to prevent unwanted attention from robbers:confused:

    Ordering a bee suit?

I'm looking to buy a new suit for my wife but not sure what size to get or where's best to order from. She is getting quite interested in bee keeping BUT really doesn't like getting stung, especially having experienced a full on anaphylactic shock following a medical procedure (not bee...

    Ant nest inside a hive

I checked my hives today and one, a large nuc(?) in a brood box which was made up 2 weeks ago after my pig knocked a hive which was being demarree'd over, has a large colony of ants in it. They have set up home behind the frame runners and there was thousands of eggs in there:eek: I scraped...

Good News About the Weather at Last!!!

Same troubles here:rolleyes: The weather's been so poor the bees have been stuck in doors for too long and are like bored kids atm. Did a demaree on another hive last week:reddevil: Weather improving next week but most of the best forrage is almost over. The bramble has almost finished (had...

    Eggs :)

Keep them in the nuc for a little while longer until the colony is quite strong and filling the box. Also, and here's the bad bit sorry, there's still a possibility that the queen is a drone layer and not managed to mate properly. You'll find out in a week or two once the cells are sealed...

Preparation for going away on holiday

:smilielol5: You could leave a bag of 'o' rings for them to use like rubber rings:rolleyes:

Preparation for going away on holiday

:iagree: Stick a super on before you go. You'll be amazed how much a colony can grow in 2 weeks and by giving them room before they need it you'll be limiting the chance of them swarming. If adding the super does slow them a bit by cooling the colony a bit (too much room) they will still catch...

To add a super or not

    :iagree: Same here:D

Does lots of drones mean agressive hive

Last year my top bar hive had huge numbers of drones and was a model apiary citizen;) It's suprising how many drones they'll make when you leave them to their own devices

Newbie - havent looked in on them in 2weeks

I suppose it would depend on the depth of the gap:confused: Maybe if it's only a bee space deep they won't build wild comb?
