Spring is here (well for 2 days anyway)

Had a quick look this lunchtime, all looks well, bees on seven frames, tens of drone brood, Queen is very beautiful.

    Neighbours show true colours

My next door neighbour is terrified of bees, I had a talk with long him. He actually took delivery of the queen that B+ posted to me last year as I wasn't home. :)

Does anyone keep native black honey bees?

Seems to be the nature of some of the beasts that post on here.

Does anyone keep native black honey bees?

I bought a colony of "black" bees last year. After they followed me over 3 fields I decided they were not the bees for me.:nono:

Confused about timings when moving swarms

:iagree: When I've used a poly nuc to pick up a swarm I've closed the open mesh floor. Despite making sure the queen is in the nuc you find a few hundred workers underneath the mesh. I found that out when I collected my first swarm, my wife was so happy to have the extra company in the car...

Hi and help on hive selection, to polyhive or not and what's wrong with langstroths!

I use the same adhesive that Derek M recommends to make the Celotex cosies..Glues and fills. It's horses for courses Steve. ;)

Hi and help on hive selection, to polyhive or not and what's wrong with langstroths!

Yup, that is a bit of a downer. Although I would buy all three, plus a couple more shallows and combine postage.

Hi and help on hive selection, to polyhive or not and what's wrong with langstroths!

I bought my runners off eBay, try Simon the Beekeeper. Yes the castellated runners fit too. No problem about the questions, it's the only way to find out.:)

Hi and help on hive selection, to polyhive or not and what's wrong with langstroths!

There are grooves in the boxes that take the same metal runners as the wooden boxes. The wooden supers will fit on poly deep boxes but they look wrong, and roof would need strapping down. Why would you buy wooden supers when the poly supers are the same price, or often cheaper?

    Varroa

I agree with Pargyle about the so-called experts giving the same advice year in year out. But, as Eyeman said it can help a beginner that has no mentor. As said above, even if it's wrong it doesn't do any serious harm. You later just realise that sometimes the experts can and do talk utter...

    double brood box

There are lots of folks that use double brood, I think Hivemaker is one. But, there is also 14x12, and Commercial sizes to consider. Another point is, if you don't like double brood it's easy to just go back to using Nationals, although there is a strong opinion that the National is not big...

Hi and help on hive selection, to polyhive or not and what's wrong with langstroths!

Maismore's do National, 14x12, & Commercial, in poly. They also do feeders to suit. Plus ekes if you change your mind and change from National to 14x12.
