    ok so inspected the top BB today .. 8 days after making this up .... was all prepared in the sunny lunchtime (tho cold wind) to whip the qc's into a nuc or 2 ..... get the top off and not a SINGLE qc at all .... there is me counting chickens ....... yours ever confused.

    ah good idea inspection board in ... getting a bit cooler this week so might just do that just delighted i found the queen ... must be all your training Dani !! - not too much smoke and using marigolds (using elastic bands to keep the cuffs down) !

    Finally did it today at lunch time .... and this is the first time I confidently found the queen and ensured she was in the bottom box ! - previous years have been tragic with shaking bees into the bottom box. @jenkinsbrynmair I left the queen on one frame of brood in teh bottom brood box ...

    Yeah this is a nobbled colony that was going great until i put it from a nuc to a full hive - I was pretty careful too ..... well going to give them a chance to raise a new queen this way using this test frame.

    Hi so the test cell ... they have created queen cells .... so confirmation then ...which is a shame. So should I give them some fresher eggs or let them build a set and check in 10days and cull/pick the best looing q cell to progress ?

    Want to expand this year so keen to get on with a demaree on one of my hives that is looking strongest - drones out in the hives but given the cold weather (esp at nights) ..... should I hang back ? I think I waited the other year and blew it as they started with the queen cells ! Yours in...

    Dani qq here -if you leave a few nurse bees on it .... what happens to them .... didnt want to do tooooo much shaking so I have a test frame in mine a few stragglers remained (bee brush deep in the garage to my shame)

    forgive my ignorance but we saying 'early in the season' queens ? so for the humble backyard beekeeper we should not rush to start splits ?

    TBH - I use this site a lot more ...and maybe I am just looking for excuses for my bad year in 2020 ! Anyway .... I should be wary of splits that start to fail - I think I left nuc's last year too long waiting on a queen to 'get into gear'

    @Karol well last year was enough for me and I going to give the waspbane a go - for a single apiary (2-4 hives) ...what is the recommendation - just get one of the bait chambers and one refill to last me from May ? til Oct ? (appreciate it is hard to know how many wasps in any one season...
