What is happening to our queens

Very true Improvement for some is to buy in something someone else says is good. Simple selection of the best, controlling mating .... and improving their stock, seem far too complicated. But if beekeepers in an area could work together we could all benefit..... then one goes and chucks in a...

    Storing New Frames / Foundation

Seems more beekeepers are going plastic.... saves a lot of time and expense of messing around with old fashioned wooden frames and possibly Chinese beeswax contaminated foundation...... Any converts ? Chons da

    Where do mating flights occur?

I witnessed an incredible "shag~fest" of apiary vicinity mating last year at one of BA's old haunts.... an isolated place up on Dartmoor. Drones everywhere and an incredible burst of activity and noise... then silence I think the drone congregation area event is as rare as it seems to be...

What is happening to our queens

:winner1st: All such a worry... particularly when a beekeeper who lives in an area in which it has been very well publicised as a voluntary native bee breeding area.... imports so called "Buckfast" bees from Gozo and sells on to his BBKA branch at a knock down £27 each .... because colonies...

    Beekeeping Unit

You could plausibly blame a prospective 2nd home owner who was taking a "look around"! ( One such stopped, fined, and sent home by Devon & Cornwall constab. on the A30... said their trip was not an essential journey... had travelled 200 miles from London!!!) ( Radio Cornwall yesterday) Chons da

    Drone comb question

Some use drone comb above a qx in a supers... ???carries a few grams extra honey. OR Put in the brood box.. bees may add more drone comb to the bottom of the frame.. place towards the edge of the brood chamber. Chons da

    THANK YOU (covid~19)

BIG THANK YOU..... To Sherriff in Cornwall ( Beesuit manufacturers) for donating bags to machine wash uniform in, to the staff at RCH Trelisk Hospital. My nephew has just taken up an NHS front line nursing post... leaving a very well paid Private sector post ( Not a lot of cosmetic surgery...

What is happening to our queens

And "drones eat lots of honey, do not make any and take up space for honey producing workers in the hive".... actually heard this at a lecture given by a "Master Beekeeper"

    Native AMM queen query

Some of my Cornish Amm queens fit that description... and (grafter mother queen) DNA shows 95% Amm and group M in the mitochondrial DNA...... and this seems to breed true as nearly all of the 40 nucs I checked yesterday ( Last seasons queens open mated on Rame) had queens of this coloration...

    Question about aggressive Buckfasts

For balance... some of the hybridised bees produced in the way of Brother Adam, can be very nice and productive bees to keep. Just giving them the generic title of "Buckfast" does not mean that they will be nice to keep and productive.... I have seen some real so called "Buckfast" horrors...

    Question about aggressive Buckfasts

Does the opposite run true if the f4 gen is inseminated with the ( near 100%) pure drone. I still can not understand how a hybrid ised bee between 2 sub species can be called pure? One of my apiary owners breeds Devon Red cattle and he goes to extreem lengths to select the correct bull...
