    Drone brood.

I have taken a longer look. Not able to get photos sorry. Still not able to see the queen but saw 1 egg, deep in cell suggesting that a queen is laying. The drone brood is essentially in the right pattern. Not much pollen is currently being brought in but plenty of stored pollen left and loads...

    Drone brood.

I've got loads of drone brood and can't see any worker brood. I don't know if I still have a queen or laying workers. (Couldn't see her. had loads of bees (and lots of drones of course)). Could see lots of larvae but no eggs-but my eyes are not so good. If I put good eggs from another hive in...

    Advice on propolis

I have opened one of my hives (on a really warm day) to find it stuck with toffee-like propolis everywhere. I couldn't move the frames and the end one started to break. I managed to get the second one out just, but decided to abandon the job when the third and fourth were also stuck down so...

    Drawing out comb in bb

My bees have produced plenty of honey (2 1/2 filled supers) and I want to take it off and then feed them, but they haven't drawn comb on the outer 2-3 frames on each side of the brood. Im not sure why. Instead they have polished cells in the super above the Queen excluder. I'm concerned that...

Quick advice: two hives with supersedure cells

Glad yours are ok. When i opened the first hive, having combined them, I initially thought that the bees above the paper must have been quick to respond to their queen being killed, so on seeing the supersedure cells i removed them. As I inspected the broodbox beneath, where my chosen queen...

Quick advice: two hives with supersedure cells

I had 4 colonies and now have 2. Decided to combine the 4 and end up with two for the winter. One was large and irritable all year and so i combined with a small calm colony formed later in the season. The other two were just small calm colonies (again, formed later in the season)...

    advice on re-queening please

I have 4 colonies of bees. 3 struggled this season with new queens, poor mating opportunities etc. due to the weather, but I have got them through and they are now calm, laying, healthy although a bit small because of how long it has taken to raise the new queens. I plan to unite the two...

Could my queen have jumped hives?

As with many beekeepers, the weather has proven to be a challenge for my new queens to mate. Three out of 4 became queen-less at some time or other. I have needed to give eggs from my strong hive to raise the chances of other hives developing queens. This has been a success for two hives, but...

    Formic acid

How useful is Formic acid for mite control? Where can i get formic acid in the UK? I understand that there is a product called 'Mite away' which conveniently has impregnated pads, but i can't locate them.

Will my bees swarm if i over feed them fo winter?

do i need to feed if they are collecting themselves? i fed mine a few weeks ago after i took the honey and the weather was dull, but i'm treating with apiguard so i presume it is difficult to feed with syrup. The weather here is great, and they are working as hard as the best days of summer...

using an oven to soften honey

I have a 15lb bucket of solid honey from the spring which i want to liquify but i don't have a warming cabinet. I have an oven which is accurate and also cooking thermometers to use inside it to check. Am i silly to try liquifying the honey in the fan oven? If so what temperature is good
