What's flowering as forage in your area

The primroses don't seem to have made an appearance here yet that I've noticed, but snowdrops certainly have. As well as daisies and dandelions! James

    Foundation making

I might have to sit it in the airing cupboard for a while then. "Shed temperature" has turned a little brisk over the last few days. James

    Foundation making

In fact, if you zoom in on the photo, I believe there's one half of the set of plates behind the large stack of foundation. James

    Foundation making

That would be interesting to know. My first efforts with my silicone mould were around 120g per sheet whereas Thorne suggest about 75g per sheet with theirs (which is close to identical as far as I can see). Mine are improving as I get more practiced though. I'd also be interested to know how...

    Foundation making

As far as I'm aware they're a pair of (metal?) plates carrying (in this case) the foundation pattern such that a sheet of wax can be placed between them, then pressed (using the mangle) to emboss the pattern into the wax. James

    Honey fraud solved

We had a customer in today who owns a restaurant business. We got talking about food etc. and he told me that it's easy to tell the difference between real and fake honey: you just need to put a dollop of it in a bowl and then cover it with water. The honey remembers the hexagon pattern that...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I can't help wondering if, when a manufacturer/vendor gets a new product made in China, a whole load more don't get made on the quiet and offered on the likes of Aliexpress or Temu, eventually finding their way onto Ebay and Amazon. James

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I reckon mine might be a rip-off of that. It has the lugs, too. It seems natural to use it the other way up though, so the edges retain the wax whilst it is being poured in. James

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I believe it has been done. I feel sure I've seen a video or photos of such a thing. Seems like a lot of work if you still have to make the flat sheets though. James

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Just been out to check. The alignment isn't absolutely perfect, but it really isn't very far off. Quite possibly more down to me getting the sheets misaligned rather than the mould being wrong. James

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I guess I'd describe it as moulded. It's not an embossed pattern pressed into a flat sheet of wax, at least. Whilst I can see the appeal of the latter method (especially if the wax is then more flexible), I can't justify the cost of the machinery to do it. I have a pair of embossed silicone...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Flushed with my success at getting the car door open, I decided to wait before removing the lock and replacing it as there's fiddly stuff to be done and only a couple of hours of daylight left, so I moved on to my next experiment with wax: making my own foundation. It took me a few goes (but...

    Cars hate me

Nope. I plugged the replacement lock into the wiring loom and it failed to operate, so I guess that means there's an issue with the electrics for the central locking somewhere. I've checked the driver's side door (where the central locking controller lives) and can see no issues there, so the...
