Starting Beekeeping in 1965 or 2015

Well in the 1960's no varroa, so bees much more able to survive without intervention, or with bad intervention; so not sure I entirely agree that it's easier now.

Would it be ok to site a hive in a garden near a motorway?

I have any apiary 100yds from the M5, does not cause any problems, but keeps me entertained seeing the queues on Saturday mornings in summer.

I want a properly warm day!!!

Not opened any of mine yet either, was half tempted this afternoon when the sun came out, but the wind is still very cold so I resisted. Contented myself with weeding the garden, weeds grow regardless of temperature!

    Allotment rules

I would think that anyone keeping bees anywhere would be very foolish not to have public liability insurance, likewise it is sensible to register on beebase. BBKA recommends that allotment beekeepers should hold Basic Certificate as indication of some degree of competence.

    motorized radial extractors

There are several threads on here on this topic. I have a Giordan 8 frame radial from Agri Nova and would highly recommend it. SNAP!

    Hi

You need that course!! No they don't hibernate, but they don't fly if it's too cold or too wet. That doesn't mean to say you won't have bees flying in the middle of January. Hives stay outside all the time. You will find the reasons for artificial swarm on your course. Also several good...

Epipens, their use and possible dangers

Don't think it is as simple as that. As an apiary manager I have been trained in dealing with anaphylaxis. Firstly you can't legally buy an epipen in this country without a prescription. Second there is no way I am going to randomly stab an epipen into someone because I suspect they may be...

Epipens, their use and possible dangers

NO! Not allowed and not at all a sensible thing to do.

    Hi

One hive will not be all you ever need. It may get you through your first season, but in year two (and very possibly year one) you will need to do an artificial swarm which will require a second hive. It is much more sensible to keep two hives anyway, as with one hive, if it dies out you are...

    Honey in art

Whatever turns you on. Would have been more interesting in the middle of an apiary!!

    Natural Beekeeping in Urban areas

My answer is "I only treat my bees with organic compounds". Because any chemist will tell you organic means carbon based, and nothing to do with hugging trees.

    10/50 and 200 rate foundation

Also note that the £10 price is for premier grade. Standard is cheaper and does the job.

    Straight labels

I'm like you Cazza, but I do find that if I am sitting and put the jar on a shelf at eye level I make a much better job of it.

    Swapping brood frames

I burn my old brood frames. If they are removed as regular frame replacement you don't want to be putting them in nucs. The hassle and mess to retrieve a bit of gruddy wax and cleaning the frames for re use is not worth the effort in my opinion

Honey straight from the hive.. honey flow

Now if you can train moths as well that would be something;)

    Spring feeding

Wouldn't do any harm to put some fondant on, better safe than sorry. I won't be thinking about syrup for at least another month or so.

    Porter bee escapes

Throw them in the bin and get rhombus escapes.
