    Spring flow at last ?

I'm certainly hoping we may get a flow now, as it has been so dry. But it's been raining through the night and still is, so fingers crossed for some lovely nectar...

    Old Thornes plastic queen excluder

Drex, I believe the original ones were ORANGE, and they were replaced with WHITE ones, which are really not very good. They work, but I don't like the ones that lay directly on the bars and I only bought the orange ones in the first place for an emergency supply.

    Gloves

DO NOT get those heavy gauntlets if you are learning, as you need to understand how to manipulate the frames and wearing those things will give you a false sense of security. Most of the people I know who insisted on them tend to bang around their equipment, which is not conducive to relaxed...

    Gloves

I prefer no gloves, so you can feel what you are doing, but in certain hives, it is not a good idea as they have sprayed propolis over everything and it then impedes other manipulations. I use the cheap nitrile ones and they are perfectly adequate, but the thicker ones suggested are...

Fermenting honey –-advice for mead, please

Thanks, CVB, I concur with all you said, but only became aware of this at the weekend. Will get cracking on it. After all, what have I got to lose? The honey is already no use.

Fermenting honey –-advice for mead, please

Thanks, MasterBK. I have a good bit of experience of brewing (from my youth) and will use a hydrometer to determine the OG. I had thought of a champagne or chablis yeast (or something like this though I have never used it before), as I'd prefer a dry finish and wouldn't the sauternes produce...

Fermenting honey –-advice for mead, please

Dear All, I have had a bucket of honey I bought in last year start fermenting. I can only assume it was a dodgy seal as there is nothing wrong with the rest of the honey I have been selling alongside my own. Anyway, I have about 30lbs and rather than kiss goodbye to a considerable investment...

    Swarms and thorns

Thanks. Half an hour of huffing and puffing from the smoker and it was job done. Almost undone as I retrieved the box leaves I'd used for structural integrity so I could close up later, but those that fell stayed inside the box. No harm done and a five minute pickup on return with not one bee...

    Swarms and thorns

Thanks. No room to get the missus take more, but it can help some be less scared and marvel at the sight of all those individuals acting as one. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

    The ideal bait hive?

In my experience, the ideal bait hive consists of equipment you have just cleaned to be put to use and whose loss will be a disadvantage to you.

Get some experience first in the form of training or shadowing a beekeeper. Then you can start to learn how to keep bees.

    Swarms and thorns

Had my first swarm of the season last week and it was relatively simple. As I have pyracantha outside my front door, I hope they never alight there, but use the privet on the other side.

    2017 Beekeepers Suit Recommendations

I always wear a baseball cap under my fencing veil to keep it away from my face. I simply don't get on with the hat and hoop ones –-must be my build and the size of my head which never fits the hats. I also tend to use a buff (stretchy headwear/kerchief/sweatband) in the summer to stop the...

Knicker elastic always goes and when it does, instead of looping it over your thumb, just loop it over your middle finger. it does the same job.

    2017 Beekeepers Suit Recommendations

I have a BB Wear suit and jacket and have to say the quality is excellent. I also like the green. Others are also good, but most of my division seem to use BBWear. I only use the fencing type veil. I find the hoop style tends to bounce around on my head and i have to keep pulling it aside so...
