Poly Hives - Do they NEED painting ?

perhaps someone could start a trend by posting rear views of hives.

Poly Hives - Do they NEED painting ?

"is photo degradable so will eventually deteriorate in sunlight so yes, paint it." like all them young ladies posting selfies on twatter etc. degrading themselves via photos. and covering themselves with several thick coats of protection.

Poly Hives - Do they NEED painting ?

as above - aside from the tiny gaps prone to freeze damage and algal colonisation the big problem is UV damage - take a look at a PH that's been outside for a year. the surface is slightly powdery. painting prevents all these problems. one just has to decide whether the time it takes to paint...

Can I use diluted bleach to sterilise old comb?

"I found mouse droppings in there so just want to sterilise before I give them back to the hive" plenty of hives will have had mice droppings (and, of course, mice) in them over winter. bees'll do all the sterilisation you need - a coating of fresh propolis and Robert is your proverbial. No...

    First Swarm

"Free bees" That's barely enough for a queen cage, let alone a caste or even a prime swarm. still some people get easily excited. TFIC well done!

Can I use diluted bleach to sterilise old comb?

"Much as I hate to agree with RAB, he is dead right on this one." Although of course, further to my previous post, despite Ethanoic being the correct systematic name, Acetic is the preferred IUPAC name.

"My thread was moving to a different apiary, over 3 miles away!! And I wanted only one journey!!" presumably just the hives and no fox, chicken and grain?

    Who's lost a swarm then...........

"Is it normal for them to sit around for days? Should I look harder for mine?" i should add that most of that time was spent tightly clustered in the rain.

    Moving hives with supers

why the water spray? your closed hive doesn't have one!!!! bees'll be fine - the spray is just to help out in a very hot enclosed vehicle during transit. just think package bees.

Transfering swarm to new location/orientation query

personally i'd've just manned up and done it as soon as they'd had a few minutes unleashed on new site. KISS. no need for an extra visit. even better would've just been to tip from swarm box to new hive on day on collection, or maybe next morning.

    Who's lost a swarm then...........

had a nice one sat at chest height in a tree for 3-4 days last week. unfortunately OH had to just keep an eye on it as unsafe for her to collect. bees ignored hives with old brood frames placed around them and left on thurs pm. however she spotted one on way home from local nursery - now safely...

Transfering swarm to new location/orientation query

can be done whenever - so long as you keep the new box on same site as the old one you're ok. they are reorientating to a box they call home at position X+/-3ft no more.

    Fondant Feeder

as per rab - fully provisioned 14x12 does not need fondant. "Year two... two late swarms" How late? mid october? plenty of time to feed up late swarms otherwise.

With swarming, necessity is the mother of invention

had scouts investigating gap under roof at parent's house last week - long distance emergency solution was to spray WD40 into the void. seemed to work as no further activity.
