Can I keep bees without taking the honey?

I understand that journalists make the problem look bigger than it really is but you suggested that if there were no beekeeping the population of honey bees would go up and that bee related infections would not become a problem. In some ways what you are saying is true but only in the short...

Can I keep bees without taking the honey?

You have proved my point. If bird keepers kept Blackbirds the high death rate of Blackbirds would go down.

Can I keep bees without taking the honey?

Are you trying to say that France is the "New Australia" and France doesn't have a problem with Varroa? or any other honeybee related problems?

    Clipped queen swarm

:iagree: I was told that a queen has no way of knowing she has had her wings clipped and just falls out the hive. As there is little "swarming" as the bees won't leave the queen, anyone who would of phoned you to let you know the bees have swarmed might not of noticed.

Chris you don't seem to talk very highly of yourself. Talking tosh and trying to support it isn't working very well for you. If the French beekeepers are happy with infecting each others hives, then I don't think anyone from this forum would be in a hurry to buy a nuc from france.

    drone laying queen

It may not stop your queen from laying drone brood but you did say that you haven't seen the queen. So by removing drone brood you that the % of varroa down in your hive and when you go back the marked frames you can confirm that you have a queen without shaking all the frames and say losing...

Oh my word you learn something new everyday. So would Organic Mushrooms be OK for Vegans to eat? Animal waste free?

    drone laying queen

I myself wouldn't shake all the frames to find the Queen. I would mark a frame (with drawing pin) and take a look at it in say five days time. Varroa love drone brood, so you could alway take a frame or 2 out and remove all the drone brood with tweezers. Trying to save as much drawn comb as...

Can I keep bees without taking the honey?

I do feel that is a bit like asking "do vegetarians\vegans eat carrots?"

Can I keep bees without taking the honey?

I see your point, yet to have a hand off approach to beekeeping doesn't seem right. Nor does it seem right to not eat honey. It seem to me that it would be like ignoring the wonders of the world. I mean you wouldn't walk through a meadow of flowers with your eyes closed or listen to the morning...

Can I keep bees without taking the honey?

How can beekeeping be exploitation of the honeybee if they die after say 3 years without the aid of a beekeeper? Not forgetting the explosion in population of verroa if there were no such thing as a beekeeper. whilst I also admire your sentiments of a vegan, I couldn't be a vegan myself and if...

Can I keep bees without taking the honey?

I would use a queen excluder from April till late October, or you would have to inspect all the super frames as well as the brood box frames. If they start to run out of space in the brood box (risk of swarming) move the queen excluder to above the super and add another super on top. Yet you...

    Swarming Weather end of month

That is a really good weather site to use, yet I use the BBC one too as you can see the cloud cover through out the day too.

Going to your local beekeeping association is a must, as you don't know if beekeeping is for you until you have been hands on. Good Luck Duncan

    Queen Wasp.

I buy my wasp traps from a book shop of all places lol and they cost me £1.99 each. This is the wasp trap I use. I put fruit and sugar syrup in my traps and there is no interest from my bees.

    Bee Bubble

I agree, that there are to many new beeks that ask "what to I do with my bees when I go on holiday in May?" I still go on holiday in the swarming season but I have a 4 day holiday instead of a 7 or 14 day holiday. Other problems are that some more experienced beeks when teaching newbie don't...
