    Flying in the rain?

Some of my bees are out this morning and it's hissing down! Tough maybe but not desparate 'cos I fed those in need a few days ago.

    feeder

I have some of these and also had problems with the centre section. I just leave it off, use a handful of straw in the well of the feeder ( as suggested by someone else on the forum). No more problem. I do prefer the type of feeders with the inverted cones - never had any issues with these.

good idea to start or not?

I wonder if the OP has been reading an old beekeeping booklet that I have ( originally published by E H Taylor Ltd ) which tells the beginner .... " The initial outlay is not great - beginners outfits are listed in detail in our catalogue. Therafter the yearly maintenance is very little" Just...

    Double brood - National hives

I have seen this mentioned lots of times when people are talking about double brood / Brood + 1/2 . But, like you, I have seen queen cells all over the frame not just on the bottom , however this was on single brood only. Perhaps someone could say whether a double brood is different to the...

    sugar @tescos

If you type something like " 25lb in kilos " into google it will show you the conversion. Works with any other conversion too.

Can anyone tell me why my smoker always goes out!

I find that when you are practising ( and not working with the bees) it will stay lit for hours but when you actually want it to stay lit for hours .... it goes out after a few minutes !!!

Just received the first swarm call....

Had a big swarm on Tuesday evening on a fence post not 30 ft from my my apiary - oh bu**er I thought. I managed to get it into a box - to cut a long story short- and hived it Wednesday morning. Full inspection of the other hives shows this was not from any of mine . Yippee ! A nice swarm to...

Im new to beekeeping and I would like some help.

I would agree with all of the above. Be prepared for conflicting advice from different beekeepers - it can be difficult to know who is right. You say you have 2 acres of land. Have you thought about offering an apiary site for an experienced Beekeeper? You could then tag along when...

    Plastic frame feeders

I had a similar idea with the ones I bought some from Maisy More in their sale ( £5 each). I have used some rolled up plastic netting that is sold as gutter mesh ( to stop leaves blocking up gutters) . I put the rolls in vertically so that the bees have loads of ladders to climb out of the...

what I saw in the hive today

RAB said " "There are no drones or drone brood.". That is entirely normal at this time of the year. I would be very worried for the colony if there were. " Why ??? My bees seem to have survived over winter and lots about flying in this warm weather. However... Two weeks ago I saw a dead drone...

The EU are at it again

"An acceptable catch-all alternative to costly per-batch testing would be to put the following words on our jar labels: May contain GMO products, along the lines of the 'May contain nuts' warnings." Unfortunately, this won't work as if the honey does contain GMO products you won't be able to...

The EU are at it again

"We have a secret GM trail in our area. They have bee hives set around the GM trail area, with some hives right on the same field and some hives at different distances away from the field. The beehives are there only to see what, if any GM pollen does get into the honey. And to see how far the...

    Beehouse

Our BKA has a beehouse and I hate it. You cannot see into the cells properly ( when looking for eggs etc. as it is too dark and when the bee inspector came he took every frame outside to inspect it. Also gets very hot in summer - and our bees don't like sweat dripping onto them ! I do accept...

    Breeds of bees

The comment/book being referred to is, I think, Beekeeping at Buckfast Abbey and was written in 1975 - so his comments were probably following the then common view that British Blacks were wiped out in the 1920's. R O B Manley was an established beekeeper in the 1920's and he also states...

Condensation and Mould - Building regs say...

I agree that OMF's would probably make a difference. Br Adam used Dadents, primarily due to the very large brood box - more bees = more honey if and when it happens. He has no time for BS brood boxes. Br Adam says that South Devon is not a bee paradise - 65ins of rain per year average ( one...

Condensation and Mould - Building regs say...

"brother Adam lived in very warm area, where Hivemaker lives, and he had no idea about winter. " I agree that winters on Dartmore may be warmer than Finland (not sure where Gale lived) but Br Adam also mentions that this form of wintering was used but gradually abandoned in Canada...

Condensation and Mould - Building regs say...

In "Beekeeping at Buckfast Abbey" , Brother Adam relates how he undertook a series of trials on hive insulation - he talks about 4" on the bottom , 6" on the sides and 8" on the top. No issues with condensation - all hives dry and no mould. However , without exception all colonies failed to...
