    Does it matter

It's what happens when idle beekeepers twiddle their thumbs waiting for the season to start proper :)

What did you do in the Apiary today?

ugcheleuce, You have been blessed with a wonderful site for your bees! I have visited Appledoorn and Arnhem a few times and in the summer it is a truly beautiful place. Plus unlike UK one can ride a bike in safety :)

Swienty Poly Nationals - design change

If they are anything like the CWJ poly supers I have found them to be excellent quality and much tougher than some of the other poly offerings. Just looking at their site I was disappointed to see that the poly roof has no cut outs to steady a lashing strap. Would have been simple to mould in...

    Stings

I followed Heather's advice last year about the Lakelands, and instead of loads of stings to the leather gloves I had 1 sting all season, and it hardly penetrated the gloves. They are very strong and quite resistant but also not too thick so make for easier manipulation of the frames. Like any...

    Foundationless beekeeping

Tom, I like the Hoffman type screw spacing in your second picture, very nice. Do you make your own frames or if not can you tell me where you can get the solid bottom bar? I think it would be better than the usual two piece bar on 14X12 frames as I find they twist a lot.

    painting poly

If you are talking about the new National Size Pains feeder I painted mine inside with gloss paint and they worked out fine, but on the ramp up to the slot where the bees come in to access the syrup I sprinkled sand on the gloss. Just check that your gloss paint does not react with the foam...

    Paynes Poly NUC

Fatshark, that looks a good design. Any more pics? I'm interested in what you did at the bottom of the EKE. Is that a crown board at the bottom that is the same size as the outer dimensions i.e. 500mm?

My thread. New bee keeper needing info. will update with pics of my project.

That is a real beauty of a boat Irishguy. As a relatively new bee keeper let me say that the best investment you can make is to join the local association. You will meet local beekeepers and invariably get a chance to visit an apiary and get stung! That was my first objective before buying...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Never tried seaweed but Gaviscon or Rennies will normally do the trick :laughing-smiley-014:laughing-smiley-014

    Overwintering poly nuc

Finman, I have read many of your posts in this form and respect your knowledge, especially the years of experience with Poly hives. At the risk of starting a "oh no not OMF debate again" thread I'd nevertheless like to ask you... In Finland with it's extremely cold winters do beekeepers...

    poly feeders

The gap between the dividers and the floor is far too big, I had lots of bees drown when the feed level dropped and they got into the main feeder area. am going to modify them to leave just small slots for the syrup to seep through into the feeding area, and add a few "rafts" (wooden coffee...

Bees drowning in Poly feeder - help

Thanks for all the replies. The feeder is the new version Poly by Payn^&s and I have the dividers fully pushed down, but if you look at one you will see there is a massive gap between the divider and bottom of the feeder. Next time I will add a strip of wood with small slots to effectively...

Bees drowning in Poly feeder - help

I have three of the new version Pay**s poly feeders. I took extra care when painting them inside to roughen the bee ways and when adding a second cost of paint I dusted them with sand to make as rough a surface as possible. I put them on on Sunday and thought I'd take a look near dark tonight...

Pxxxxs poly hive coverboard & winter

That's a great idea. Could also make a slot in it for feeding fondant with my usual "takeaway" trays.

Pxxxxs poly hive coverboard & winter

I'm pondering the same problem. The manufacturer told me that there is no problem with the bees going round the sides of the frames, and thinking about it the bees must go round the combs in the wild if they are attached at the top of the hive. Can't say I am happy about using a standard cover...

    Spiralling out of control!

One of those camping portaloo tent thingies. Seal it to the floor with tape then get in there zip it up and use a small extractor, run into buckets and off you go.
