    Winter Sales

Same here, to be honest I looked at the last round of sales and didn’t think there was that much savings to be made. Went through all my kit and still have a few 100 frames to make up from last season and as I now have a lot of plastic foundation don’t need much of that either. Some more buckets...

    Hive deaths

didn’t think the weather had been that harsh so far this year, ok a few days of solid frozen ground but all mine have been out this last couple of days. Even the 2 frame Langstroth Nuc that was made up from a late mini mating Nuc. I’ve not treated for varroa now for 2 seasons as working with VSH...

    Plastic Foundation

Have had mixed results mostly positive though. Have been using both wood frames and wax as well as wood frames with plastic foundation since 2018. Only complete disaster was not pre waxing first and they made one hell of a mess building their own comb in-between the frames. Now with 27 colonies...

Added more Fondant- small amount left was frozen- wonder if ever a use for such as this?

I have one of those pads, however don’t recall it being thematically controlled? Think it got to 50 C as you state. I set mine under the OMF on a brood & 1/2 Langstroth, it was wired to a 12v battery and smart charger to keep the battery topped up. Did it as a bit of an experiment really to see...

    Incubator for Queen Rearing

I made one for £20. Used a polystyrene box used to transport frozen food, a 12” tube heater and STC 3028 dual temp / humidity controller. Temp wired to the heater to control temp, humidity just to monitor the level which is obtained by placing a jar of water next to the heater. I can do 20 cells...

First experience of hive theft issues!

I only keep my cheap hives with home made felt covered roofs at locations similar to what the OP describes - these also contain the worst and nastiest bees I own. Also I may have accidentally left a few bits of wood with 3” nails sticking up as they were covered with leaves last time I left the...

    Hardiest bees?

3rd December 6 degrees C and a bit of sun not as many as recent days but still bits of pollen coming in and brood cappings under the OMF. This colony covered 36 national brood frames at the end of August

    Strangely short of stores

How heavy were your hives a few weeks ago and how big are your colonies? Could be large colonies blasting through their stores or if not that large a colony consider have they been robbed?

    Unseasonal behaviour

After seeing a thread on here, think it was titled “spring flow?” I thought I’d post these pictures taken 2/11/22 north Manchester area. Strawberries flowering & fruiting / bumblebee foraging on honeysuckle Thought it would be good to see other examples from around the country so please post...

    frame numbers vs honey yield

Another consideration for better yield is use drone foundation, bigger cells, less wax, more honey. I do this in my Langstroth hives.

    bottling honey tips

Even when closing the gate in between jars I still often get a little drizzle of honey on the side of a few jars, amazing how it then spreads and labelling would be messy. Once I have securely sealed all jars and double checked the lids are tight, I then wash the jars and place them on a towel...

Do honey bees learn behaviour ?

    1) suit is only a cheap one and the Velcro tab is a bit worn, zips do cross over each other and to gain access the bees need to almost burrow their way through which they do. 2) always tucked suit into my wellingtons, hadn’t really thought about putting it over the top so will try that next time

Do honey bees learn behaviour ?

Suit was not washed between sites visited on the same day so I would have thought site 1 bees attack neck area and would leave the sting pheromones in that region so surprising at site 2 about 30 minutes later bees ignore the neck and go for the wellington route. Suit always washed when...

Do honey bees learn behaviour ?

Reason I ask is from my observations this season with 2 quite nasty hives. I put some nasty colonies out on 2 farms this season for the OSR, with the intention of re queening and to keep them out of the way of people. So did well on the OSR, re queening was a disaster (another story) but every...
