    £1 for 1lb

Early the very early 70's yes ... but remember that inflation was rampant in the early 70's. If it was a £1 in the late 70's then it's pro rata only about £5 now. I value mine at over £15 but sell it for a bit less ;)

    Sublimox

Little advantage in spending all that dosh on a Sublimox to then add it under the floor ... the hive really needs to be sealed and you just push the nozzle through a 6mm hole in the side wall of the floor or an eke over the brood box. If you're doing it from underneath an OMF I'd save £300 and...

    Rhombus Escape Times

I've noticed that queenless hives appear to clear supers less fast than queenright ones ... not a big sample size (but larger than I'd like :( )

    Automatic counting of Varroa mites

It's not ... but pollen and wax granules on the Varroa tray mite be. I've dabbled with automating mite counting - though using ImageJ software that allows characteristics such as the colour and "roundness" of the mite to be used for recognition - and it's not easy. Under real world conditions I...

    New Zealand BK's

If this is due to disease then you urgently need to review your mite management. If it's due to starvation then you probably need to review your mite management ... and feeding strategy. When is the Manuka nectar flow? Presumably not end of season. Re. point (2) ... my Threats to bees slide...

Lot sof honey but how much to sell?

Not necessarily ;) The demand for high quality local artisan honey is high and the markup likewise ... but it all still sells.

Journalist questions regarding UK hive thefts

Of course, it's always bigger in America ... 2500 hives valued at c. $1M ... "a chop shop for beehives". Makes the Brackley Bees heist look like amateurs ... And in response to the Q re. are they increasing ... I honestly don't know. In my time as a beekeeper there have always been a few...

Journalist questions regarding UK hive thefts

I suspect a major driver is the over-inflated prices quoted in newspaper articles ;) ... or, perhaps more seriously, the oversimplification in the press of how easy it is to keep bees, thereby driving continuing demand. If the articles stated that it was difficult, that honey yields were often...

    DNA research on Irish AMM.

Thanks B+ ... though I guess German beekeepers are only satisfied if they live in the area which promotes/insists upon their preferred strain. However, I can't fault the organisation and feel that it must make comparisons of the relative qualities of individual colonies much easier. We've some...

    DNA research on Irish AMM.

Colonsay has an import ban on bees ... it is possible to designate areas for conservation reasons, rather than disease. Not saying this would be possible here, but it is possible. Don't they also restrict certain regions in Germany to carnis?

What to do on a hive that hasn't be looked at for years

If you can choose the middle of a warm day to inspect ... they'll all be home "last night"

    Bait hives

Not what the scientific studies by Seeley and other show ... they prefer shorter distances, ~20m rather than ~400m.

    Apidea crown board wanted

Cut a rectangle from a thick square of polythene ..., cut three sides of a square to make the little flap to pop the QC through.

    Why Washing soda?

Merkin ... too much time? Part of daily vocabulary in parts of Fife I'll have you know ;) It's also the name of a particularly successful type of fly for permit fishing.

    Why Washing soda?

Curley ... Merkin? They have entire websites on pubic wigs? Extraordinary. You learn something everyday.

    Deformed wing virus

The plus 2 days is pretty much irrelevant ... but the temperature isn't. Apiguard needs 15C to work, below that and the colony aren't usually active enough to spread it around the colony. It states this temperature on the (boxed) packaging, specifically about Spring treatments.

    Bait Hive

The evidence is that they choose to go a smaller distance ~20m than a larger one ~400m.

    Suit or separates?

Suit for a beginner ... quite unnerving when bees crawl up your back as you're bending over. However, all other comments about cooking are also correct ... BBwear - I have full suits and jackets from them and they're all good. There are others, including Sheriff, but I'd go for a company that...

    SHB arrives in France?

Might be worth mentioning that the link provided pops up some 'unsafe' images you wouldn't want your boss looking at.

How are people responding to the trick thymol question in the Beebase survey

Er, that's what I meant. It is a completely unremarkable product, but it's also worse than the 'raw' stuff.
