    Mad Mad..

Flowering currants can be a bit misleading ... there are some here (Fife) that are regularly in flower in early/mid March (pic from the 15th this year) ... I think there's a lot of strain variability.

    Dowda method

I'd try and practice high impact IPM ... Low impact IPM is surely an oxymoron ... if it's low impact it's not management

    Use of apivar

Resistance is slow because of multiple targets (in contrast to Apistan which has one and in which resistance develops quickly). Resistance to Amitraz in other pests (not Varroa) is well-documented. We know the target and we know how resistance develops. Instructions clearly state 6-10 weeks...

    hive roof

This stuff ... Lightly sand the bit you're attaching it to, clean with a solvent to remove grease and press down hard. Works well.

    Apivox auditor

Build your own ... http://www.instructables.com/id/iphone-apidictor-for-acoustal-beehive-swarm-detect/ but unfortunately the reference (NBB) to Woods's 1957 Apiductor is broken. It's the Nutshell guide thingy from NBB by Rex Boys.

    hive roof

Correx works out about £2/roof (purchased from eBay) and you don't need to 'cover' anything with it, just fold the corners, tape them and hold it down with a brick or two. A few 'For Sale' signs are big enough to make a roof from and can be found. The Tories had some big blue election signs...

    Wedding favours

I've used 4oz hex jars with a "hand printed" neatly tied - with ribbon - label. They're a bit of a pain to fill properly in any significant numbers (I've done up to ~400) and the jars take more than 4oz to fill properly. Don't underestimate. Like I did :(

    Swienty vs Abelo poly

Good point Mellifera Crofter ... that's where I've been most aware of the condensation. It's a long time since I opened these boxes but thought I'd seen it on the (overengineered) crownboards as well. I'll look more carefully when I next check things. I think Into The Lions Den has also...

    Swienty vs Abelo poly

I've got bees in both now. Swienty are softer, lighter and smaller (10 vs 11 frames). Abelo have an irritatingly large number of inserts and plugs. However, being ready-painted is a bonus. It's not a like with like comparison as I use some wooden components mixed with the Swienty boxes...

What can I do with nasty but prolific hives?

Thanks for the air freshener tip (that it doesn't work ... one less thing to attempt). Nitriles + Marigolds for lively hives. I don't even own leather gauntlets and so have never used them. The hands are relatively impervious to stings - particularly through the double gloves. The forearms less...

What can I do with nasty but prolific hives?

I'd just fork out the drone pupae. I've never worn leather gauntlets. I only use nitriles or Marigolds, or the two together for what I'd consider a hot hive. I've therefore no idea how to mask the alarm pheromone really effectively. I do sometimes give my gloved hands a few puffs of smoke...

What can I do with nasty but prolific hives?

Not sure what others think, but 7 is not acceptable to me. I agree it's not an angry hive, but it's sure as heck not one i'd be keeping the queen from, rearing from, or allowing to produce drones.

    Breeding Groups

SNHBS do ... details under 'Projects'. There's also one on Ardnamurchan. Undoubtedly others, but I know the people involved in these. I suppose you could argue that SNHBS is a 'national' group, but I know some of the projects pre-dated the establishment of SNHBS last year.

    Winter/Spring Hayfever?

    Yep Over and out.

    Winter/Spring Hayfever?

Unscientific nonsense that's been reasonably thoroughly tested. Of course, you can never prove that honey doesn't prevent hay fever ... but when people have looked in controlled studies there's no beneficial effect of taking honey. There's also the type of pollen that generally causes hay...

Extra Large honey containers and using customers own honey jars

Poundland do snap top polypropylene (?) tubs that take 2kg and are perfect. They were a quid, funnily enough.

What does your local Association do that you enjoy?

My present ones don't but previously the co-op purchasing scheme was outrageously good value ... they bought stuff in bulk, added 10% for the club and sold at a very significant price advantage. Fondant by the pallet (or 3) worked out pretty cheap. Jars were a real bargain. That, and the...

    Under Floor Entrance

I rest my case m'lud. You can use a Varrox with an OMF but not via the entrance. You also cannot use a Sublimox via the underfloor entrance as the majority of the Api-Bioxal ends up stuck onto the back wall of the vertical slot. Been there, tried that. A final advantage ... an L-shaped...
