    Ending a demaree

I have already extracted honey from my middle supers (rape) and don’t plan to continue the demarees dut to lack of time & holidays. I have put the wet supers back above the BB. The top BB’s are heavy now with stores. I plan to remove the demaree boards and remove some of the honey filled frames...

    Rape extraction

Any one started extraction yet for ‘Rape honey’, ie any yet at 18%… it’s a balancing act between getting it extracted before setting hard but being 18% or less water content. Not heard the bees ‘humming’ yet to reduce water content or smelling it too! Last year I extracted here in East Yorks...

    Demaree

Over the last two weeks I have demareed several hives. I have used demaree boards that you have previously suggested and all works very well. I have lost one Q though which (on all drawn comb) and am thinking on future demarees of putting an eke with a Q excluder above the entrance and maybe...

Chicken Registration by 1st Oct 2024

Many beekeepers keep chickens so this may be of interest. Compulsory Hive Reg next… (I do voluntary reg with BDU) ‘Under the changes announced there will be new requirements from 1st Oct for all bird keepers - regardless of the size of their flock - to officially register their birds...

    Foundation alternatives

I used starter strips this year on brood frames with bamboo sticks as support - most created just drone brood comb. I had interspersed them in the bb.

    Raw honey

Rather than raw I use the word ‘Pure’ on my honey jars.

    Raw honey

‘2. Heated to temperatures that effectively pasteurise it - allowing it to remain in ungranulated state.’ Does any one know to what temperature it is heated to then still called raw honey!

    crystallizing honey

I have bought some Rowse soft set (£3:340g) to sample, it’s like a paste compared to my own soft set which is firmer… like butter. I plan to experiment and use a little of the Rowse soft set as seed honey and see how it works with my own honey to make soft set. I will be interested to see how it...

Equipment For Sale Uncapper for National frames

I have treated myself to Garry’s uncapper, it is a neat piece of kit. Like most people I find uncapping the most tedious part of honey extraction and with this kit I hope it will make the whole process a lot easier. Currently at a relatively low price for uncapping equipment. Well done Garry...

    Defective Gas Vap Burner

I find the Gasvap a really useful and easy to use tool for vaping OA. No problems with using it, hope others are not put off buying one by a few negative comments. It has my vote as extremely effective & cheap.

Can you feed fermented honey back to the bees?

    Bee shed

Great feed back, thanks all. T&G then and not buy cheap! And inspect before buying!

    Bee shed

Thanks for the feed back , so it’s 12’x8’ min then. Prices range hugely on overlapping or tongue & groove sheds, any recommendations anyone…or ones to avoid?

    Bee shed

Any advice on ‘sheds’ for beekeeping. Mainly to be used for honey extraction. I will be able to connect to electric, I have a 20 frame electronic extractor. Thinking of getting a stainless steel sink to go in the shed. Looking at a shed measuring 10 feet by 6 feet.

    Drone brood with yellowish tops

Took a picture of worker together with drone brood here in East Yorks. The drone brood has yellowish caps to them… not seen this before. ( It’s old comb & I know a bit late for drones. ) Any thoughts on this phenomenon of yellow capings?
